. Maketu 21st. Oct./70. My dear Mr. McLean, I came down from inland yesterday. I met Mr. Warbrick at Kaitiriria on last Tuesday 18th. inst. He had just arrived from Taupo and he is so proud and pleased about the little Telegram that you sent him. He showed it to me. He says that he will get it framed. He says that he never felt so proud in all his life - than when he recieved your Telegram. Mr. Hamlin R.M. is still up at Oraki Korako. My Transport is working and travelling 80 miles every 5 days - it is close upon 90 miles and I have such lovely weather now - that it seems almost a pitty to let the packing out by contract - after one has worked through all the wet winter because at the end of this month I could tell you what the packing would cost per lb. during the summer months. I hear that the Govr. and Duke are likely to come down here in December to visit the Hot Lakes the little bush near Tarawera wants to be cleared as the track is full of fallen trees and branches that have come down, through the late snow storm - also their are two small bridges that want repairing near the Rev. Mr. Spencer house they only have a few holes in them the Native Contingent could easily do it. The first crossed the Taheke Ferry yesterday morning in a canoe, I saw it go over myself - and you can't tell how glad I was to see it go over alright as it seemed to me as the dray was going over - that New Zealand was getting a little more civilized - and when you come to think over it yourself - that with a very little trouble, you could start in your buggy from Maketu and drive the whole way to Opepe with ease. No news about Te Kooti - Weather lovely - Pack Horsesleave again tomorrow. Remaining Yours ever sincerely, Herbert F. Way.
