2 September 1875 Ford's Criterion Hotel Napier My dear Donald I hear that you have very hard work of it this Session, more than I expected but I hope your health will hold out during it all. There was a man up from Otago looking at the back country and was well pleased with it but thinks it is two much money. I hear another party going up to see it in a day or so. I have some news of some importance to tell you. Among the things I should not forget to mention that I hear from outside talk that Wairoa natives are very dissatified at not being settled with the late purchases there. I have heard this from several reliable persons whose respectability I cannot doubt. Of course I know nothing about the matter but should think that anything approaching to discontent on the part of the natives of that district at the preasant time is very much to be regretted and should if possible be remedied. Mr Man[e]y is going on busness to Wellington and will no doubt call and see you ad will be able to explain matters to you from that quarter and I hope all will be well. You know I do not like to hear those hints to the disparagment of a government that has done so much for the country. I am writing in a hurry to catch the steamer but thought it will gave you the hint. Your affectionate brother Archibald John McLean
