Wairoa April 10th 1865 Dear Sir I forwarded a rough report to you this morning by the mail relating to the Hauhaus - You may wonder why perhaps we took so much precaution in going armed It was first to keep our people together and secondly because it was uncertain what the others ment there were reports also that they intended murdering Kopu and during the time we were getting ready a letter came from one of Kopu's people who had turned calling on the others to fight - The Hauhau - Many other reasons might be given - Mr. Deighton was at the Mohaka it being court day there - The Hauhau next go to Matiti and then perate those are the present arrangements My intention is to go with the friendly natives to Matiti and further if required they shall have no peace - Laquin the carpenter who put up the stockade has worked very well I told him that I would mention it to you - so also did the volunteers in putting up the building - I have settled the dispute about Kaimango the ground on which the stockade stands - Paora Rerepu has arrived here with a few followers as proud as possible he is a good fellow - Kopu has acted exceedingly well, Paora is all right I believe, Hamana is at present - Hamana and his sister Ereni Ruataraongaonga want very much to sell their land at pouhutai - The Tamaki from the end of Hirawanu's sale to the Ruataniwha appearantly on the Ruahine side of the Manawatu, Hamana asked £1500, for his share he wants an answer - Will you send up the box of Tools for Richmond Paora and Kopu have asked again about their goods - The maori police that are now organized are promised pay the same as the volunteers - I hope also that Grahams pay can be raised to £20 per annum he does his duty well - I am happy sea that old Morgan from the putere is here with paora Rerepu The sale of grog is stopped during the stay of the Hauhau but they get it some where for I hear that the High priest is drug - All questions connected with land sales are in abeyance but not stopped - I hope Kopu will get his rifle and that moremuskets will be sent they can lay in the stockade here - If there are to be any Military settlements I trust the Mahia will one of the first then Nuhaka - Old Matenga must give up his muskets he had but ten I dont think there will be any trouble about that.
