Private Tauranga Sepr. 27, 1871 My dear Mr. McLean I never read with more astonishment any paper than the extracts sent me of Mr. Dometts Memo on Tauranga Lands. Such a tissue of false conclusions in my life. He knows nothing of the subject upon which he writes - Altho' I do not believe Mr. Kelly's motion for a Commission to enquire into these matters was intended in any friendly spirit yet I have reason to be thankful o him - I do not fear the result - After the Commission has sat I will bring Mr. Dometts memo under the notice of the Government again. There is no question that Mr. D. hates the natives and all who have to do with them. I hope the Government will select a man of known probity as Commissioner one who will report and not romances - Don't trouble to write - You have more than enough to do. In great haste Yours very faithfully Hy. T. Clarke
