Wanganui. July 9th. 1872. Dear Mr. Maclean, I am purposing shortly to reside on the town side, and more particularly to take the charge of the natives who frequent the town. The chief difficulty will be the want of a room where I could have services with them on the Sabbath. Mr. Woon, I find, is in want of a similar room to meet the natives who come to him as their magistrate. It appears to me that should the Government allow one to be erected for him, it might be made to meet both purposes. I could also suggest a very suitable situation near the Hospital, where the street is of a triangular shape, widening out to fully three chains towards the river. There would be ample space there for the purpose; and at present it is not used for any other. Another want for the Natives visiting the town is shelter. Formerly they had a building erected in the market place, which was called the Queen's Whare. That has disappeared; and now they are obliged to encamp out on the side of the river. I need not say that they are far from being bad customers to the town; that all their produce is brought down and disposed of here. On every account therefore, this is a subject worthy of attention being paid to it; and I trust you will be able to do something for our natives. I have also to remind you that your clerk, by mistake, carried my map of this district away with him. Will you be so good as to return it, as references are constantly being made to it. I have paid two visits up the river; and upon the whole, I thought the state of the natives was as good as could be expected. At any rate they gave me a very gratifying reception. As soon as the weather improves, I shall hope to repeat my visits. Knowing the interest you take in the natives, I feel sure you will do what you can on the points mentioned.
