Feby. 14th. 1859. Greytown. My dear Sir, Mr. Fraser found me at the Ahiaruhu on Saturday evening (day before yesterday) whither I had proceeded to pay up some balances on my Maungaraki purchases, and very glad I assure you I was to see him, I know him slightly and believe he will suit me very well. I was getting desperate for want of assistance. I purpose setting him on at once to survey all my Maungaraki purchases, set out Reserves, etc. etc. As regards Monies lent by you on behalf of Natives I have written you fully last week and believe ten minutes conversation will set all right. I have had some correspondence with Mr, Parris at Taranaki about Native claims on Waikanae which I trust will allay their fears of being forgotten in the payments to be made. I have wasted all last week, going down the valley to Otaraia, and Tahitarata about some land which the natives wanted to sell, I knew very well there was no land but they the Natives would not be satisfied without my going there, so I went and spent a week among them, did no business but satisfied them completely. I purposed going to Pahana today about some land there but shall not remain there more than a day or two. By the bye that old countryman of yours, old McMaster, took me for £45 for a horse. As I presume I may now expect you here in a few day's I shall defer saying more till be meet and am, dr. Sir, very faithfully yours, Will. N. Searancke.
