Wairoa Sept.20th 1866 Sir Since my return to Wairoa from Napier, I have had further opportunities of forming a correct Judgement respecting the views of the Natives generally, on the several questions at issue amongst them at this Juncture -and have been considerably instrumental in preventing further dealings with persons desirous of occupying native Lands in cases which would have added materially to existing complications. I may mention the cases of 'Tamihanas' land on the 'Waiau' which he has been seeking for some time past to let - and which the Messrs Thorpe had agreed to reht from him - I was asked to take a part in the negotiation but declined on the Representation of 'Pihira Kopu', and wrote to Messrs Thorpe to that effect and also recommending that no farther steps should be taken for the present - Tamihana saw me this morng. and promised to write to you on the subject. I merely mention this to show that a little time as convenient should be lost in taking some measures for the settlement of these matters -The natives are unsettled and expectant of the projected meeting, from which I anticipate large results - At 'Mohaka' Paora rerepu has asked me to survey his lands for the purpose of passing them through the court - he is also anxious that something further should be done about 'Pihanui' the block on the 'Waiau' some time since offered to you. I am unwilling to do anything in any of these matters that may not meet the thorough concurrence of the Govt. and altho extremely anxious to get to work have preferred waiting hitherto until I should have the Honor of receiving, some intimation of views on these subjects. The 'Wairoa' has now upwards of six feet on the bar with a soft bottom. It is scarcely likely that we shall have a better entrance than we have at present: and the continued presence of the 'Huntress' is to say the least of it detrimental to the Interests of the settlement.
