Portrait of Thomas Waters. Photographer: George Henry Swan (ATL ref. PAColl-9714) A brother of Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, inventor of the incandescent electric light, George Henry Swan trained as a chemist in Newcastle-on-Tyne. He arrived in New Zealand in 1857 from Australia, and established himself as a photographer in Wellington, latterly in partnership with James Dacie Wrigglesworth. In 1864 he moved to Napier to operate the Hawke's Bay branch of the studio. In 1869 he left photography and purchased the White Swan Brewery. He led an active public life, serving as mayor of Napier for 15 years and as an MP from 1891—1893. This portrait, taken around 1860, is of interest in that it shows a tradesman rather than one of the professional class, who were more commonly photographed at this time. Its subject, Thomas Waters (1825?—1864), was a painter and glazier who lived in Willis Street, Wellington.
