7 Rugby was another formerly Pakeha ritual adopted with enthusiasm by Maoris, from the 1880s. The game was regarded as an ideal vehicle for Maori competitiveness, and for combining individual flair with over-all team work. This pre-World War One team is pictured at Kaiapoi.
