1. BARMECIDE (M. DAVIES) LOSES HIS RIDER AT THE FIRST FENCE IN THE STEEPLECHASE (2 1/2 MILES) AT THE TATTERSALL'S CLUB RACE MEETING IN SYDNEY. 2. A. R. MILLS, D.C.M. (Leicester Harriers), who won the great Marathon Race at the Polytechnic Harriers’ Athletic Sports meeting at Stamford Bridge. MILLS, who is shown with the valuable cup which he received as a result of his brilliant victory, subsequently accompanied the British team to Antwerp as one of Britain’s three representatives in the Marathon Race at the Olympic Games. 3. B. HOWARD BAKER (Liverpool Harriers and Athletic Club) winning the High Jump at the Amateur Athletic Association's championship meeting at Stamford Bridge prior to his departure for Antwerp to represent Britain at the Olympic International Games. 4. COLONEL COULSON (Second Irish Guards) Winning the Long Jump with 21ft. 9in. to his credit in the British Army Athletic Championships, recently held at Aldershot. 5. MRS. HILDA WILLING, (on left) a war widow of Rochester, engaged in a test swim at Dover with her trainer and pilot, .Mr. Weiman, of Dover, preparatory to her attempt to swim the Channel. MRS. WILLING made a highly praiseworthy though unsuccessful attempt to swim the Channel, leaving the water in response to her father’s entreaties, after swimming 30 miles, at a point six miles from France. 6. NEW ZEALAND OWNED GELDING REGISTERS AN IMPRESSIVE VICTORY IN THE NOVICE HANDICAP (ONE MILE) AT THE TATTERSALLS CLUB MEETING.—Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s ch g VESPUCCI (J. Mackie) winning from the favourite, SYCE MALURYS (T F McNamara) third. 7. FRANQUESELLE WINNING THE POLE JUMP AT THE AMATEUR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION'S CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING AT STAMFORD BRIDGE. 8. B. HOWARD BAKER, Britain’s representative in the High Jump and Hop, Step and Jump at the Olympic

MISS EILEEN O’CARROLL (Hauraki Plains candidate), who was elected Queen in connection with the recent Red Cross Carnival held in the Thames district. Miss O'Carroll headed the poll with 222,346 votes, scoring a victory over the Valley (162,363 votes), the Soldiers (102,791) and the Navy (74,084) candidates. A total of over £700 was secured for the Red Cross funds as the result of the contest.

THE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT.—THE KING AND QUEEN LEAVING THE HOUSE OF LORDS, THE GUARD OF HONOUR BEING COMPOSED OF SCOTS GUARDS. ALL ALONG THE ROUTE THEIR MAJESTIES WERE ENTHUSIASTICALLY CHEERED BY LARGE CROWDS, WHICH INCLUDED MANY MEN IN KHAKI. In opening the new session of Parliament the King emphasised the need of an adequate army to reap the fruits of victory and to safeguard peace.
