TE PEHI KUPE Te Pehi Kupe, a famous fighter and an ally of Te Rauparaha, went to England in the 1820's to buy guns. Te Pehi had a particularly beautiful moko, and spent much of this time while he was in England in drawing it for his foreign friends. ‘Europee man write with pen his name,’ he would say. ‘Te Pehi's name is here’, and he would point his forehead. This copy of Te Pehi's drawing is by Gordon Walters.
