The story in ‘The Magic Tree’ never happened. The artist. Mark Tapsell, a Maori from Rotorua, made it up out of some very vague references he heard about a magic tree and the names he used are not intended to be significant, although there are in fact tribes bearing these names. In printing this ‘comic strip’, we should like to draw attention to the lively and distinctive way they are drawn giving them an artistic quality all too often quite absent from this type of entertainment.
