Maori carving and carver

Mr Hikairo Herangi stands beside his Maori carving which was given to the captain of the new Liquigas tanker Tarihiko by her sponsor, Mrs Rosa Birch. Mr Herangi’s carving is a manaia. The figure represents the Maori god of the sea, Tangaroa. The green colour represents life and growth with the lightning flashes representing energy. Tarihiko means carrier of energy. The carving was done by Mr Herangi at the Tainui Trust Board carving school at Ngaruawahia.
