EDITORIAL COMMENT

Since Tu Tangata featured Dalvanius Prime and “Poi-E” in last December’s issue these two names have really been in the news. What makes it ironic is that the media of New Zealand are claiming the credit for the success of the song.

As we wrote back in December and March, radio stations and televisions weren’t prepared to play the song as it didn’t fit their format. As a consequence of this, “Poi-E” was marketed around the country on the Maori grape-vine. Word of mouth contact and large numbers of requests to radio stations to play the song did the job.

It does seem stupid that TV and radio are more willing to plug local bands that copy overseas music than they are to play “real” New Zealand music. Let’s hope the music promotion executives of the media don’t have to be convinced all over again by “Raukura”.
