Carmen, born Trevor Rupe in Taumarunui in 1936, began working as a drag queen in Auckland night clubs in the 19505. In 1968 she opened Carmen's International Coffee Lounge in Wellington. She stood for the Wellington mayoralty in 1977. This photograph was taken in Sydney in 2006. The Library is acquiring material from Carmen on an ongoing basis. Photographer unknown (ATL ref.
