Notes on Accessions to the Manuscript and Archive Collection

A Selective List of Acquisitions, July 1993 to June 1994

A selection of manuscript and archive acquisitions is listed in the Turnbull Library Record to alert researchers to newly-acquired material judged to be of research value. For access to newly-acquired collections and to those marked ‘restricted’, the Library would welcome notification that access will be sought, preferably with an indication of a likely date. This will help staff in establishing priorities in processing collections. Additions to existing collections are not usually listed, except where they add substantially to what is already held. Microfilm material produced by the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau and the Australian Joint Copying Project has also not been included. New accessions for the Archive of New Zealand Music are listed in Crescendo , the bulletin of the International Association of Music Libraries (New Zealand Branch).

anderson family. Diaries, 1878-79. 3 vols. purchase. Contains the diaries of Sarah Anderson and her husband David Anderson. They record domestic, social, and business life in Wellington. andrewes, ernest stanhope. Papers, 1939-92. 60cm. donation: Mrs Pauline Fraser, Auckland. The papers include diaries, correspondence, and clippings, and relate mainly to Andrewes’ work with the National Film Unit during the 19405, and to his later teaching career. A large collection of photographs has been transferred to the Photographic Archive.

atkinson family. Papers, 1873-1926. 50cm. donation: Mr and Mrs Tudor and Jinny Atkinson, Wellington. Comprises correspondence between various members of the Richmond and Atkinson families. Most letters are from Ann Elizabeth Richmond to her sister, Dorothy Kate Richmond.

bassett, michael. Caucus and Cabinet notes, 1972-90. 36 microfilm reels, donation. Microfilm of notes taken by Dr Bassett during his career as Labour Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister. Restricted.

bassett, michael. Further papers, ca. 1963-90. 12m. donation. Whereas previous Bassett accessions have mainly comprised papers from his parliamentary career, these papers are more concerned with his involvement in local and national Labour Party organisation, and his academic work. Restricted.

younger and Arthur Clough; drafts of Capes of China Fade Away ; and correspondence with and about other literary figures, including Charles Brasch, Denis Glover, Iris Wilkinson, and Jack Bennett. blankley, henry. Letters, 14 April 1854. 1 folder, purchase. Two letters to his brother, both written on the same day, which include comment on his military and other exploits as a soldier in New Zealand.

An illustrated diary describing experiences on the whaler Susan in New Zealand and Pacific waters. busby, james. Correspondence with William Colenso, 1839. 1 folder, purchase. Comprises a letter from Busby defending himself against criticism of his actions, and a draft reply from Colenso.

byrne, Stafford. Papers, ca. 1933-60. 2 folders and 1 vol. donation: Mr Anthony Byrne, USA. Contains manuscripts of Byrne’s work, and clippings relating to his acting career. CAMPAIGN FOR BETTER GOVERNMENT TRUST. Records, 1993. 30cm. DONATION. The collection mainly consists of ephemera (some annotated), display charts, and other publicity material.

communication and energy workers union. Records of the New Zealand Electrical, Electronics and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers, 1943-92. 4.6 m. donation. Includes minutes, correspondence, submissions, branch files, subject files, and award and agreement files. Congreve, sir william Augustus. Documents relating to Mary Ashton Smith, 1852. 1 folder. PURCHASE. Comprises three legal documents which add a little to what is known about Congreve’s rather shadowy career.

davies, sonja. Papers, 1962-93. 7m. donation. Most of this collection is from the period when Davies was Labour MP for Pencarrow, and comprises a wide range of files relating to the many activities and causes in which she was active.

dewe, colleen Elizabeth. Papers, ca. 1975-93. 20cm. donation: Mr Robyn Reed, Christchurch. Includes correspondence and papers relating to New Zealand and international conferences, and to other activities with which Dewe was involved.

feisthamel, major. Letter from Joseph Paul Gaimard, 24 February 1827 (photocopy). donation: Mr A. J. Woolfe, England. fraser, kinnear george. Papers, ca. 1927-86. 30cm. donation: Mrs Pauline Fraser, Auckland. Papers relating to Fraser’s interests and activities in connection with left-wing politics, business, broadcasting, and maritime history. Herbert, d. a. Diary, 1919. 1 vol. purchase. Contains a brief account of Herbert’s experiences and activities as a soldier in World War I, including a short period with the allied army of occupation based at Cologne after the war.

hill, william Howard. A retrospect, 77 years ago of the meeting of King Te Rata Koroki at Waihi-Taupo Moana. 1 folder, purchase. Describes meeting between King Te Rata Mahuta Koroki and William Searancke at Waihi in 1856. History of Pai-Mariri-ism and Hau-Hau-ism, 1926. 1 folder, purchase. Historical notes by an unknown author concerning the Paimarire movement.

hobson, eliza. Address received from the citizens of Auckland, 5 June 1843. 1 folder. donation: Mr Mark Bertram, England. An address signed by prominent Aucklanders given to Eliza Hobson on her departure from New Zealand. holm, annie. Diary of events at St Mark’s Church School, 1917-52. 1 vol. and 1 folder. donation: Vestry of St Mark’s Parish, Wellington. A very full diary containing entries and records about St Mark’s Church School.

james smith ltd. Records, 1867-1985. 7.5 m. donation. The records include minute books, staff and financial registers, and a small amount of material relating to the Smith family. Most material relates to the post-1940s history of the company. jones, john. Wentworth-Jones deed for the purchase of the South Island, 15 February 1840. 1 folder (2 leaves), purchase. This document records a transaction between two Sydney entrepreneurs and eight Ngai Tahu chiefs. Of particular interest are the detailed moko depicted.

Records consist of minutes, correspondence, financial records, drafts, and proofs for Kapiti Poems. karori progressive association. Records, 1930-92. 2m. donation. Contains minutes, correspondence, and other administrative papers of the Karori Progressive Association and of the Karori Community Hall Committee.

Includes manuscripts for The Foreign Woman short story collection, television scripts, correspondence, papers relating to the London writers’ flat controversy, and other papers. Restricted. larnach family. Papers, 1877-98. 2 folders, donation: Mrs K. Martin, Nelson. Consists mainly of letters from Eliza Jane Larnach to her children. Also contains three letters from William Larnach to his children.

lychgate funeral home. Records, 1897-1989. 8.3 m. DONATION. Contains funeral registers and financial records for predecessor firms of this Wellington company. mair, gilbert. Papers relating to the New Zealand Wars, 1863-1913. 1 folder, donation: Neil Carr-Smith, Kerikeri. Contains William Gilbert Mair’s accounts of the battles of Mauku, Rangiriri, Paterangi, and Orakau, other material collected by Gilbert Mair about the battle at Orakau, and correspondence between the two.

Manchester, Marianne allen. Diary on board r/zc Excelsior, 1870. 2 folders, donation: Mrs J. G. Ferguson, Johnsonville. Diary describes Marianne Manchester’s (later Tasker) voyage on board the Excelsior, including comments on weather, day-to-day life on board ship, and health matters, and also copies of programmes of social events held on board. mantell, Walter. Letter, 5 Sept 1876. 1 folder, donation: New Zealand Historical Atlas. Letter to an unknown person written by Walter Mantell giving background information about his parliamentary career.

maori women’s welfare league. Further records, 1950-93. 12m. donation. Records include minutes, correspondence, branch reports, and office files of the League. Also held are Miria Simpson’s working papers for the book Te Timatanga Tatau Tatau, including transcripts of interviews, correspondence, drafts, and proofs. mclean, john chambers. Papers, 1881-1916. 22cm. donation: Dr C. N. Challies, Christchurch. Papers consist mainly of notebooks kept by McLean recording bird-watching trips and other ornithological observations. Also contains a small amount of correspondence, clippings, and articles relating to ornithology and natural history.

methodist youth office. Records ofthe National Youth Council, 1984-91. 60cm. donation. Contains the Methodist Youth Office copies of Council records, including minutes, annual reports, and the papers of Council sub-committees. mothers helpers association. Records, 1958-75. 60cm. DONATION. The Mothers Helpers Association coordinated a programme of visiting housekeepers. Records consist of minutes, correspondence, annual reports, wage books, copies of rules, duties, and the Association’s constitution. national union of railway workers. Records, 1890-1986. 14m. donation: National Union of Railway Workers, Wellington.

Contains Executive Committee minute books, 1890-1913, and National Council minute books, 1922-85, as well as correspondence files, circulars, financial records, and printed material. Restricted.

new Zealand bankers’association. Records, 1891-1943. 30cm. donation: New Zealand Bankers’ Association, Wellington. Contains minute books and other records. Restricted. new Zealand national party. Further records, 1979-93. 1.6 m. donation. Includes caucus minutes, leave books, and vote record books. Restricted.

new Zealand public service association. Holmes incident papers, 1 folder. DONATION. Papers relating to the dismissal from the public service of Cecil Holmes because of alleged Communist Party membership, and his subsequent reinstatement. new Zealand tramways workers union; Wellington branch. Further records, 1910-87. 10.3 m. DONATION. Records include minutes, correspondence, and subject files of both the national office and the Wellington branch of the union. Restricted.

new Zealand war amputees association. Records, 1939-92. 60cm. donation: Mr Doug Sherwood, Lower Hutt. Records consist mainly of the minutes of the Association. Also included are annual reports, conference reports, and a history of the Association. nolan, maxwell anthony. The Sands of Time, ca. 1963. 1 folder, donation. An autobiographical account of Nolan’s early life, including growing up during the Depression and his war service.

peters’ mt ruapehu private hotel. Visitors’ book, 1897-1912 (photocopy). 1 folder, copy and return: Mrs Tracy Peters, Taihape. The hotel was at Waiouru and the book records signatures and comments. Polynesian society. Further records, 1956-90. 3.3 m. long term loan. Consists of minutes, Council papers, correspondence, editorial correspondence, and administrative files of the Secretary. Restricted.

porirua citizens advice bureau. Telephone logbooks, 1987-92. 48 vols. donation. Telephone logs of calls received, detailing each enquiry and the action taken by the Bureau. No individual names are recorded. Restricted. randall, e. f. Letters, 1859-64. 1 folder, purchase. Letters from Randall to his sister and brother detailing his difficulties in earning a living in New Zealand, his attempts at goldmining, and his experiences in the Militia.

robertson, dugald macdonald. Papers, 1909-71. 3 folders, donation: Mr W. J. McCluggage, Upper Hutt. Contains a diary written by Robertson during late 1914 describing his first two months’ active service, a flyer relating to his campaign to gain the Buller parliamentary seat, and Robertson family correspondence.

roy mckenzie foundation. Records, 1966-94. 17m. DONATION. Most of the records comprise application files from the many community groups that have applied for grants to the Foundation since 1986. Also contains records of the Foundation’s predecessor, the McKenzie Educational Foundation. Partial restriction.

scorr, Robert thomas Charles. Diary, (photocopy). 1 folder, donation: MrsE. M. Mattar, Christchurch. Robert Thomas Charles Scott was a surgeon in the Royal Navy. The diary entries give detailed information about Scott’s life during voyages around England, South America, and the Pacific.

Correspondence, clippings, speech notes, and other material relating to Shelton’s political career. smart, ted. Letters from Ben Smart, 1850. 2 folders, donation: Mrs Susan Brelstaff, England. Ben Smart’s letters to his brother Ted describe his voyage to New Zealand, his first impressions of life in the Otago region, and his voyage up the coast to Lyttelton.

A full diary written on voyages from Gravesend to Port Chalmers on board the Timaru and from Lyttelton to Gravesend on board the Coptic. smith, mary anne. Letters from Gilbert Mair, 1914-15. 1 folder, donation: MrNeilCarrSmith, Kerikeri. Letters give news about weather, trips, and visitors, and comments on World War I. SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF WELLINGTON. Records, 1939-90. 70cm. DONATION. Contains minutes and a rough draft of a history of soroptimism in New Zealand. stokes, Bertram Oliver. Diaries, 1879, 1917-18. 6 folders, donation. Contains diaries written by Bertram Stokes during World War I, and a diary written by his father Thomas Oliver Stokes on board the Wanganui, 1879.

Thomas Tatlock was a private in the 43rd Light Infantry. Diary details Tatlock’s time in New Zealand, especially his involvement in the fighting in Taranaki, 1864-68. taylor, richard. Report and copy book, 1856-71. Ivol. long term loan. Contains drafts of reports written to London by Octavius Hadfield and Richard Taylor and copies of correspondence between Taylor and James Booth.

te watene. Address, 1849. 1 folder, purchase. Address by Te Watene at a feast to honour the presentation of a portrait to the colonial hospital at Port Nicholson. waitangi foundation. Bringing the Records Home Fellowship papers, 1993 (photocopies). 2 folders, donation. The Bringing the Records Home Fellowship was established in order to send an archivist to England to identify material relating to New Zealand suffrage. The collection contains copies of the material identified.

Contains a minute book covering the period from the club’s first meeting in May 1894 through to 1904, and other miscellaneous records.
