As before, it is in two main categories, firstly, original manuscripts which have been donated or purchased and secondly, material lent to the Library for photocopying. Because of the volume of photocopies involved it does not include material held in original form in other libraries or copied by the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau or as part of the Australian Joint Copying Programme.

BURRELL, A. Notes on Maori dialect distribution, [ca 1970] 2v. Donation: Mr A. Burrell, Kimbolton Road, Cheltenham, Feilding. Notes on 1918-1920 discussions of theory of the presence of Western Polynesian dialects in the extreme north and south of New Zealand, pushed there by arrival of Eastern Polynesian dialect peoples. COUGHLAN, William Nixon, 1874-1938. Papers, 1906-1963. ca 15 items. Donation: Mr R. W. Coughlan, Auckland. Letters, newspaper clippings, papers, pamphlet and photographs related to service as Headmaster of Omaio Maori School and building of church at Waima.
CRAWFORD family. Papers 1811-1939. Indefinite loan from Brigadier H. N. Crawford, Naughton, Wormit, Fife. Diaries, notebooks, correspondence, and papers of James Coutts Crawford, 1817-89, and correspondence with family. Papers cover his naval career, sojourn in Australia, farming and development of land purchased at Miramar, service as Provincial geologist and reflect his interest in natural history, agriculture, mining etc. Early material used in Recollections of travel in Australia and New Zealand published in 1880. Papers of sons deal with development of Miramar estate, sheep farming etc. Sketch books in Art Collection. Extensive use of papers only on authority of Chief Librarian.

Correspondence, mainly with the Maori Ethnological Research Board, relating to the translation by the Misses de Beere of A. F. Kramer’s Die Samoa-Inseln. DERRY FAMILY. Letters, 1879-1937. 16 items. Donation: Miss N. Wood, Nottingham, England. Living conditions in Christchurch in the 1880’s and economic situation in 1930’s described.
GASCOIGNE, Joseph William, 1885-1972. Papers, 1850-1936. 3 inches. Donation: Estate of J. W. Gascoigne. Papers relating mainly to European War, 1914-18 and Trooper A. E. Gascoigne who was killed at Gallipoli, 1915. Includes letters from John Tapai Pirangi, Rarotonga, 1933-36; also history of Guinea Airways Ltd, 1934.
GREENWOOD family. Papers, ca 1750- ca 1900. ca 4 ft. Donation: Miss Priscilla Greenwood, Richmond. Correspondence, journals and letterbooks primarily those of Dr John Danforth Greenwood and his family who arrived in Nelson in 1841 including portraits of the family by Mrs Sarah Greenwood. Also Journal of Frances Greenwood, 1771 and other earlier material with English and American associations. Typescript transcripts of extracts. Access subject to sorting.
HENDERSON, Jane (Brown) Reminiscences. Donation: Mrs P. Meikle, Stoke, Nelson. Describes journey to New Zealand with her parents in the Talbot, 1864, and their life in Mercury Bay where her father worked in the sawmills. HILLIARD, George R. Lady Nugent journal, 1840-41. Purchase. Journal of Surgeon Superintendent on voyage of Lady Nugent from Gravesend to Wellington, October 1840-April 1841. Record of passengers’ physical condition, and of Hilliard’s response to aspects of life at sea. Sketches.
HODGSON family. Letters, 1846-1853. 18 items. Purchase. Letters of William Hodgson and his family to J. F. Lee, owner of Hyde Ironworks, Kinver, England. Describe voyage to Nelson by Himalaya 1843-44, state of New Zealand Company’s Nelson settlement, land problems and difficulties of establishing farm there.
HUGHES, Evelyn Madeleine (Steinmore). A short history of the Woolston Public Library to commemorate its centenary in 1971. Typescript. Donation: Mrs E. M. Hughes, 482 Linwood Avenue, Christchurch. Compiled from Minute Books detailing early struggles and financial problems.

KAWASE, Isamu, 1908Reminiscences, 1965. 1 inch. Donation: Professor I. D. Blair, Lincoln College, Canterbury. Unpublished MS recording family background from 1855 leading to studies at Lincoln College, 1931-1934, directed towards pastoral improvement in Japan. Account of pressure applied by the Japanese High Command during World War II to disclose information on New Zealand. Wartime conditions in Japan.
KELLER, Peter, 1880?-1961. Reminiscences, 1900-1915. lv. Donation: Miss C. Keller, Wellington. Early working life, work as P.W.D. engineer on Main Trunk construction at Taihape, Raurimu and Ohakune, 1903-08; later Westland and 1 aranaki; details of camp life and Central North Island journeys.
KOCH, Augustus Karl Friedrich, 1835-1901. Papers, 1859-80. 1 inch. Donation: Miss Brenda Koch. Autobiographical reminiscences covering early life in Germany, experiences as a seaman, as artist on Hochstetter’s staff during his explorations of Auckland, and as chief draughtsman in Hawke’s Bay. Minutes of three meetings held to draw up plans in the event of Bol-shevist-inspired industrial strife; papers setting out background to League’s formation, and details of proposed action. McWILLIAM family. Letters, 1862-1866. 9 items. Donation: Mr A. Aitken, Glasgow.
Thomas McWilliam and his family farming at Matarawa (Wanganui) provide account of life there and effects of Maori Wars. MANSFIELD, Katherine, 1888-1923. Letters to Katherine Mansfield from a variety of people including Frieda and D. H. Lawrence, William Gerhardie, S. S. Koteliansky, Hugh Walpole, Edmund Blunden. 18 items. Purchase.
MARINE Underwriter record book, 1814-1853. Donation: Estate of J. W. Gascoigne. Contains variety of records concerning vessels trading with the East Indies, including insurance principles, examples of methods of insurance computation, details of ships, voyages, provisioning. Mostly East India Company ships involved.
E. W. MILLS and Co. Ltd. Minute books, 1883-1900, 1919-1965. 4v. Donation: Mr J. S. Stacey, Karori. Directors Minute Books of Wellington Hardware Merchants founded 1854. MURRY, John Middleton, 1889-1957. Letters to Katherine Mansfield, 1912-1923. Circa 400 letters. This acquisition brings together in the Library both sides of a unique literary correspondence. Purchase. Closed during Mrs Murry’s lifetime.

Minor offences and transfers to different stations, pay ledgers and records of sick leave and furloughs. N.Z. ARMY. WANGANUI MILITIA DISTRICT. Letterbooks, minute books, attendance records etc., 1860-1900. 18v. Donation: Estate of Mr C. L. Lovegrove, Wanganui. Letterbooks of Militia and Volunteer Office, Wanganui and Military Settlers Office, New Plymouth and records of the Wanganui Rifle Volunteers.

Daily account of work on Waikato farms belonging mainly to Thomas Russell and the Auckland Agricultural Company. Description of farms, land and bush in the Waikato, at Maketu and in the Taihape district. Details of horses, horse auctions, races and hunts. Trip from England to New Zealand, 1886. Copiously illustrated with sketches.

John Raven and his agents in Christchurch concerning the management and disposal of his property in Canterbury; diary of Mrs Sara Raven kept at Ravenswood, 1862, and a Raven family history, 1730-1970.
ROB ARTS, Edward, 1771Narrative of a voyage to the South Seas, 1797-1824. Positive microfilm, ca 9 ft. Purchased from National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh. Robarts, on a whaling trip from England, deserted at the Marquesas Islands, married there and piloted and provisioned visiting ships until 1806. Thence to Tahiti and taken by Captain Dalrymple of The General Wellesley to Bay of Islands where he met George Bruce and took on a cargo of spars. Robarts left the ship at Calcutta and lived in India visiting Van Diemen’s Land and Sydney. Includes description of Marquesas Islands and Marquesan vocabulary.

WOOD, Henry A., 1873-1956. The life of a pioneer farmer, 1953. Iv. Lent for copying by Mrs P. E. Every. Boyhood reminiscences of life on farm near New Plymouth, Stratford fire, 1885, settlement in the Ngaere swamps, waterfront strikes, 1913. Appendix comprises account of voyage of William Boyd to Taranaki in 1841.
