RECORDS by Alan Armstrong The records received for review in this issue of Te Ao Hou afford an interesting opportunity to compare two of the best-known Maori cultural groups in the country. They live cheek by jowl with one another, have long been friendly rivals and even have some members in common. Strangely enough, Ngati Poneke, although they are many times winners of the ‘Dominion’ Maori Choir Championships, do not include any worthwhile examples of their choral singing on their record, while the Anglican Club, who have won the prestigious Kingi Tahiwi Award for Maori action song, generally steer clear of action songs on their record in favour of some very fine choral renditions.
