AUCKLAND Easter weekend is shaping up to be massive, and there's something for everyone ... the biggest visitor to our shores this month is House legend Armand Van Helden, who will play one show at the Powerstation on Easter Sunday (April 12) as part of Apollo 2 ... also that night, British based DJ Laidback is sure to oner up a fine selection of breakbeats, hip hop, electro, disco and dub. If the house sound isn't your thong. then head down to the Box to check this man out, with support by Manuel Bundy and T.I.M. ... Pollen is a live multi media event to held at the Kase on April 23, featuring Heliotherb Baiter Ceil, and Both, plus DJs Habeebee and Amanda. Pollen runs from 9pm until Sam, and fire magicians and choreographed dancers will perform throughout the night... Nick D'Angelo hosts Planet EA at Squid on April 9 featuring confirmed (Os Havoc, Gideon, and JRP, and D'Angelos Cheap Sex: For Your Eyes Only happens on April 25, venue to be confirmed... the main attraction on the local front for the month of April must be The Nutronic Soul Sound Clash / Auckland Versus Wellington, at the Box/Celebre on April 10. Celebre plays host to the down tempo/funky beats of Manuel Bundy and Mu, while the Box (with a wicked new sound system) is home to the faster beats of Greg Churchill, Zen, Soane, and Adam. Pitch Black odd a live element to the night with their electronica artistry in the form of sound and visuals ... in the kiddie rave genre, Storm is on at the Mandalay in Newmarket on April 9.1 don't know about the Mandalay as a Rave venue, I can't stop thinking about the school balls I attended there back in the day, scary ... Chumbwa release their debut album at Herzog on May 2 ... Chch drum and bass man The Nomad plays at Herzog on April 18 with Rotor and Nyquist in support ... with Easter weekend looking huge, there's no better way to work off those easter eggs and not cross buns. Choose your cup of tea. DAVE ROPER WELLINGTON The Roots Foundation presents New Frontiers at the Boatshed on April 9. Those doing it live include 50Hz,
Bongmaster and the Headz, plus DJs Mu, Lemon, and Goosebump ... throughout the month of April. Judder Bar hosts Radio Active DJs on Wednesday nights, with the emphasis on 'chilling out in a great environment.' DJs appearing include Mu, Matt, and Zen ... The Nomad makes the trip up from Christchurch to play at La Luna on April 16, promoting his debut album, Movement. Also playing live will be Nyquist ... DJ Patman plays at the Matterhorn on Turntable Tuesdays ... the Michael Fowler Centre hosts the Smokefree Fashion Awards on April 22 ... Welti's finest take on Auckland at The Nutronic Soul Sound Clash, to held at the Box/Celebre on April 10 ... the big local show in Wellington this month is the Life Festival on April 9 at the Town Hall and in Civic Square. Bands operating in the dance/hip hop area who are performing include DLT, Che Fu and Token village, and Dark tower. 8 DJ FRUITY Christchurch April kicked off in fine style with a visit from the infamous Grooverider — Subtronix once again bringing the heavyweights of drum and bass to our town ... there's rumours floating around of impending visits by DJ SS and Peshay, confirmations next issue ... OB makes a final return visit to Chch (before shifting to the UK with fellow Japanese superstar Yogi Biomehanika) for a night of nu-nrg at the Ministry on April 9. Flux and Kinesis will support — it you're into pumping trance, definitely check it out... Oliver Lieb, the undisputed grandfather of trance is making his only New Zealand appearance at the Ministry on April 17. Lieb will be performing at least a two hour DJ set, showcasing some of the forthcoming material he'll be releasing, as well as old classics. Supporting Lieb will be Melbourne's Jeff Tyler, Flux, Kinesis, Argyle, Lunotik, and Freq ... Hardcore reigns supreme once more on April 25, with another frenetic night at the Source. D Man, Pylon, and Disorder will be present, with other DJs to be confirmed ... so, a lot happening this month, however May looks set to be a quiet one. Till next time.
