MASSIVE’S NEW MEZZANINE In the weeks leading up to the release of the new Massive Attack album Mezzanine, exclusive 45 second previews of each song have been downloadable, as well as the new single 'Teardrop’ in its entirety. Mezzanine’s cover art is also slcwty being revealed www.massiveattack.com MANSON VS- FREE SPEECH
A surprising endorsement of internet regulation and censorship recently came from Marilyn
Manson - whose entire career has been defended by the constitutional rights guaranteed by First Amendment-who referred to the internet as, "a dangerous tool.” Manson has been the subject of a huge amount of internet rumour mongering, with false information spread by the Christian Right, and reports of his death (greatly exaggerated). KORN KEEP KOOL -TIL AFTER SCHOOL While recording their new album, Korn have been taking time out every week for the 'Korn After School Special’, an audio/video netcast concert and chat show, with live performances, guests, and interviews.’ Direct from the recording studio via the wonders of Real Video, you can watch KomTV at 8.30 pm Fridays (NZ Time). 3 www.komtv.com RESOUNDING LOCAL SUCCESS Resonance is one of the most comprehensive , websites devoted to the New Zealand music scene, with both links and internal pages to a huge amount of local acts. They also provide free websites to any NZ artist. www.reactioruco.nz/nzbands
LAME NAMES An interesting way to link to band sites is through a page devoted to wild and wooly names. The 'Band Name Of The Day’ site is just that, with peculiar or horrendous names from around the globe, either submitted or chosen by the page’s curators. Some of the names aren’t so weird — but this might be the only place where you can link to Uncle Stumpy’s Porn Funk Band’s homepage. http: //bandnames.moti vo.com/ JUST THE TICKET Still the most consistently interesting and
editorially objective site anywhere on the net, The Smoking Gun posts publicly available legal documents that tell their own story about the
stars. A recent feature was eight pages of official reports relating to actor Christian Slater’s recent arrest for fighting and being under the influence, including a drug evaluation report. There’s a huge archive containing documents of varying importance, ranging from the FBI files on John
Lennon, Malcolm X, and J. Edgar Hoover, through to David Duchovny’s (unpaid) traffic ticket for cycling through a red light. thesmokinggun.com IT F S HER PAGE
The Official Jan Hellriegel Homepage is a fangenerated site, modest on written information but big on photos. Shows promise. www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/4633/ HOLLYWOOD BABBLES ON
For the news Hollywood doesn’t want you to know, there’s two excellent sites -both of which are„__ updated daily. Ain’t It Cool Hews has outline scripts of movies still in production, and top. secret photos & news. Ain’t It Cool gains its inside information through a network of spies and insider leaks. There’s no gossip or bitchiness here, just essential movie news. On the other hand, Cybersleaze dishes the dirt on celebrity hissy fits, loose behaviour, and who’s (allegedly) screwing who. This one beats the tabloids for accuracy and bile hands down. www.aint-it-cool-news.com and www.cybersleaze.com FREQ OUT The Hypermatrix Virtual Rave Station is a Canterbury based site with news of the dance world — and not limited by local, national or genre boundaries. It’s also one of the only places you can purchase the debut album by Christchurch’s Freq, which you can also sample in the great MP3 format. www.rave.co.nz ?
E-ZINE BIBLE The zine is alive and well on the net, and far easier to read than the smudgy photocopied pages of the past. To save hours of trawling through a general search engine, this e-zine list has hundreds of entries in alphabetical order, cross-referenced by subject matter, and with clear information on the type of zine and language its written in. ■ www.meer.net/johnl/e-zine-list INTERNET ACCESS RADIO Atmos Radio promises to be up and running soon, as a showcase of NZ artists from right across the spectrum. The playlist will change daily, with a focus on a different genre each day, including rock, jazz, drum and bass, techno, and hip hop. Downloads, and info on how to submit your own material is at www.atmos.co.nz NZ MUSIC SITES If you have a site (or know of one) that relates to New Zealand bands or music, send the address to ripitupa)clear.net.nz ■ •
