AUCKLAND
Auckland club land has just enjoyed one of the best summers it will ever have. We've been spoilt for choice with a range of top quality international talent including Roger Sanchez, Derrick May, Doc Scott, Ed Rush and Trace, Danny Tenaglia, DJ Sneak, and Doc Martin all in one summer. Who would have dreamed of this occurring a year ago? Pure summer madness .The world must be running out of talent to send us ... upcoming this month, there’s the double bill of Kevin Saunderson and Jon Digweed, playing at the Ellerslie Race Course on March 6. Saunderson is a ‘Techno legend’ from way back, a man who has done wonders for the entire dance scene from the start (mid 80s). The other half of the combo, Digweed, is known for his mixing contributions to the Renaissance and Northern Exposure albums. Expect uplifting house from Mr Digweed ... also this month is the horribly named Lagered Party. Lagered? | thought most of us in dance culture wanted to get away from the New Zealand Munter male
and Sheila’s predilection to beer and alcohol. What next, a dance party celebrating Lion Red? Those playing are Gideon, Tim Phinn, Sample Gee, and Baiter Cell ... the Brain, one of the longest running Rave events in New Zealand, returns on March 27 and 28. The event has had many imitators over the years, but for the Happy Hardcore brigade, the Brain is still definitely the number one event, production and DJ wise ... and an early warning, the man like Grooverider is making a return visit, playing at the Box on April 3. Watch out for info hitting the street soon. ‘ , DAVE ROPER WELLINGTON Greetings from Wellington. It has been a sad time for us the past month with ESC closing its doors. Of course the rumours are flying that it may not be for good ... on February 6, we were graced yet by the presence of DJ Sneak and
Doc Martin at the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Deep House almost constantly in the mix. Meanwhile downstairs, Basement Jaxx were cooking up a storm with their unique blend of funky basslines and whacked out sampling — it was the most intelligent music Welli has heard in awhile ... the dark stigma of Friday 13 went hand in hand with the evil beats spun by Cristian Vogel at the Phoenix Theatre. Nice one ... Electro Forum — Une Petite Electronique began on Feb 27 at Matterhorn and continues until mid March. A biend of local live talent over a series of weeks, check it out and be proud of our scene ... the big one coming up for Welli is Kevin Saunderson, playing on March 7. HEDONIST CHRISTCHURCH Some big parties and failures in February ... Doc Scott rocked the house at Ministry, with over 700 people attending the drum and bass king. Look out for Grooverider on April 4 at the same venue ... Tony De Vit had an extremely disappointing turnout at Base. Considering he has been voted the world's fifth best DJ, it was quite embarrassing with only 100 people coming to see him ... Blu
Peter got a way better response at the Suite, but the man heralded as the ‘creator’ of nuenergy decided to play techno instead, leaving a few disappointed faces in the crowd ...
