summer concert guide
warped tour comes to town
The annual USA Vans Warped Tour visits New Zealand and Australia this January. The event includes a large line up of American bands, top USA skateboarders, and local bands, and 12 local Vert BMX bike riders and 20 invited local skaters. The international bands on the tour are Pennywise, Blink 182, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 311, Reel Big Fish, Royal Crown Review, the Vandals, Die Toten Hosen, and Sunchild. Local bands booked so far are Muckhole, Kitsch, Brubeck, the Managers, VC, and Unleaded. The Auckland venue for the Friday 9 January event is the Rosebank Domain in Patiki Road, off the North Western motorway. From each stop of the Australasian tour two winners will be selected to compete in the Vans Amateur skate competition in the USA. As well as the amateur competition there will be pro demos
from the in-line skaters, skateboarders and BMX riders. The Warped Tour will also include several non-music features of the USA tour — Spike & Mike's Festival of Animation featuring creative and cult favourites, Taylor Steele's Surf Film Festival (in the Warped mobile cinema), the Pennywise Food Drive seeking canned food for charity (in exchange for discount on merchandise), and an environment awareness focus.
The original Warped shows were West Coast USA music and snow/skateboarding benefits, organised by Kevin Lyman and David Codikow. Lyman was one of the producers of the first four Lollapalooza tours. The stated goal of Warped is to get away from the present commercialism in the concert industry. Lyman says, “It’s still like a big backyard party.’’
