AUCKLAND The internationals are back in full force in October, with a whole range of talent being imported into the country to give us all an entertaining month ... The Ministry of Sound Tour hits Auckland on the October 17, and features big manes Frankie Foncett, Derrick May, and Miles Holloway. With three internationals under one roof this will be a night to remember for sure. The event will be held at the large venue of the moment the Railway Station ... Kiss FM (London) DJ Roy the Roach returns to NZ on November 1, playing at the Strand ... drum ‘n’ bass DJ PFM hits the Box on October 24 courtesy of Subtronix. Expect a wide range of d’n’b sub-genres to be played throughout the night. PFM are best known for their ‘One And Only’ track on LTJ Bukem’s Logical Progression album, and for their releases on the Art-Core compilation series ... also that night, the all. ages rave Storm happens at the Railway station. Things are hotting up in the ‘kiddie’ rave market right now. Who will be the first rave organisation to get burnt first, especially at the soon-to-be-overused Railway Station ... Redzone has a new home opening on October 10. Renovations are underway to transform the first floor of Squid into a fully fledged house club. Changes will happen upstairs also, and with separate entrances planned, it effectively means two separate clubs. Watch for info. to hit the streets soon ... upcoming; the Ninja Tune Stealth Tour (Herbaliser, Amon Tobin) is at the Powerstation Oct 8; Retro at the Box and Squid
on Oct 11; Calibre host Tonka nights every Friday in Oct, with DJs Chelsea, and Gideon; Blurpopping at the same venues on Oct 18, with DJs John Taite, Chelsea, and Havoc; the Kase has Ascension on Oct 10, Decadence on Oct 24 r and the Drag Queen Ball on Oct 26; and finally, the Island of EA and Jungle of EA nights take over both floors of Squid on Labour Weekend (Oct 26). DAVE ROPER WELLINGTON Well alright, November finally rolls around, so we can look toward to packed bars and pumping clubs as the summer vibe catches on ... on the breakbeat tip, Subtronix follow the massively successful DJ Zinc tour with the lush, deeply refined sound of PFM. Definitely not one to be missed, . check the power of the breakbeat at La Luna over Labour Weekend ... on the same weekend, an all ages party at Club 2000 features techno pioneer Juan Atkins... Welli has seen some top class events of late; Ascension rocked Luna with Mrs Wood laying down a stunning selection of hard techno; Mark Aurbach played a late notice set at ESC on a Thursday night, and a reasonable sized crowd showed up — funny how the last minute events often make for the best parties; down at Club 2000 the Babes in the Hood crew presented Lush. It sold out, and a glammed-up crowd were treated to the best fashion this city has to offer ... La Luna has made the big change and transformed into Wellington’s newest dance club. Fridays has the Housing Project as residents, while Saturdays feature
Futurescape, with some of Wellington’s most notorious harder DJs in full effect ... meanwhile, Artemis Bar goes back to being the finest chill space in town ... coming up, look toward to the Ninja Tune’s Stealth Tour at Club 2000 on Oct 10, the king of UK deep house, Miles Holloway, a return visit from Ed Rush and DJ Trace, and of course New Years, which suddenly seems just round the corner. ANDY PICKERING Christchurch The big one for October is the Ministry of Sound Tour, coming to the Ministry on Oct 18. Unfortunately Derrick May isn’t heading down, just Frankie Foncett, with an as yet unconfirmed line-up of local DJs supporing ... Karma 2, which was the sequel to the massive Karma of last year proved to be just (if not more) as successful with well over 1000 people attending ... Catacomb, which was supposed to be at new venue the Source was instead held at the old Interzone on Lichfield St (home to Sub Zero and Zoom three years back) because of fire regulation problems. Put on by newies, the Amtrak Foundation, it was a fine debut party ... the Gathering folks are holding a party on Oct 11 out at Whitecliffe. Guests include some of the Ninja Tune posse and Mechanism, plus Nelson and Chch DJs supporting). Judging from the other Gathering parties, this one is not to be missed ... Oct is looking to be a pretty quiet month — look out
