CHRISTCHURCH

Haven’t heard from the flat city of late, and we’re still alive and well. Bar culture is definately taking off, as four or so new bars have opened in the central city over the last six weeks, each with a different theme and flavour. Licker Lounge is definitely the flavour, with it’s kitsch, sleazy feel, and a hang-out for everyone — even if it’s joined the queue culture. A place to be part of nonetheless. Metropolis is a cross between Quadrophenia and Bob Bar in Auckland, with loud new rock music as the playlist, and hosting the occasional band ... Loves Ugly Children will be sadly missed, as the three-piece have made that inevitable move to Auckland. Not only have we lost a band, but a lot of input into the music scene. Another good engineer down, damn ... Squirm’s long awaited album, Spastic Sarcastic, is due out soon. Call Celia on (03)302-8515 ... RDU are releasing number five in a series of Sheep Technique cassettes. This one’s called Harder Faster Baby. Obviously focusing on loud rock stuff, the tape features new bands Salon Kitty and Swallow, and older bands such as Snort, the Rarms, and a surprise track from Blast Off. There will be gigs to coincide at the Ox and Lordies ... NZ Music Week is coming soon! See ya.
