CHRISTCHURCH Cinematic recently played in Wellington and took the opportunity to do some recording at Marmalade. They're heading north again next month with Pumpkinhead for several shows... also heading northwards are Love's Ugly Children who are touring to promote their CD which is, after numerous hitches, now available... Holy Toledos and their alter-egos the Finnegans an extensive tour of the north and are settomaketheirfirst video... reports from New York indicate that things are continuing to go well for Bailter Space. They've based themselves there to prepare for their next tour and hope to return home for some gigs early in the new year... the Undertakers have split with mainman Stacy moving to Auckland whilst other members concentrate on their other band Lifesize Playdoh Monsters. LPM recently got a five star review in the Press for their debut album ... former Builders and Haemogoblins drummer and reviewer Tony Green has moved to San Francisco. His job at the Press has been taken over by LPM's Byron Smith ... the Christchurch Mail has a new writer for their Sound Advice column. Apparently the last writer didn't give enough variety particularly to "the guy who plays piano in the pub on the corner." One of only a handful of members in the official moog fanclub and multi-instrumentalist Chris Prentice has followed up his debut cassette release with a six track cassette, Trianon, based on Hungary... Warners have returned their stage to a more respectable level. They're now trying alternative acts on Saturday nights afterthe usual resident bands... student radio station 98RDU manager Carl Hooper has resigned... Ras Bonte has been gigging around town a lot lately and is currently touring his band around New Caledonia... new bands around town include five piece Uzziel who are a Christian hard rock metal band, rap duo Dark Tower, another metal band Incision, and Rob and Daryl from the Babels are practising a new band and did someone mention a Glen Campbell tribute band? J. GREENFIELD AUCKLAND Someone knows someone who met Mudhoney in Japan who told her they are going to go to Dunedin to record some stuff soon ... BFM are holding their annual Private Function on Friday August 20, The line-up so far goes Headless Chickens, Shihad, Hallelujah Picassos, Emma Paki, Native Bass, MCOJ & Rhythm Slave, Pumpkinhead and Cinematic. The event will be held in the old Turners and Growers markets on Custom Street West and will feature video fireworks, a bar and catering care of DKD... new skate/ music video Eye Candy is out now, filmed by Andy (Yeah Bo) Moore in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin, featuring Squaw, Figure 60 and Supercar and mucho skating Send S2O (ind. p&p) to Box 34202 Birkenhead ... Punch and Judys feature a happening video night every Thursday hosted by Karyn Hay or Hans BFM Hoef iich, playing the music vids you won't get to see anywhere else. From 9pm to midnight... the Westward Ho held the finals for their rock contest (Loose Unit, Confessor, Cranking Dream, Medicine Hat) for a bonzer first prize package: SI,OOO cash from Steinlager Blue plus a day's recording at Mountain Studios, Sabian cymbals, Peavey bass, Ibanez acoustic and Multi guitar effects from Korg . .. . speed metallers Deluge have a new lineup and are playing Punch and Judy on August 13.. . three former members of SBS are calling themselves Brown Tricycle and looking for a singer who must have a sense of humour. Fraza came second, the Merry Pranksters were third and Prod came fourth. DONNA YUZWALK ~ NEW PLYMOUTH Pub venue Stage II is now called Section 8. Under new management with a stricter dress code. All bookings phone Danny on 7532063... Nefarious won a $ 1,000 prize at the New Plymouth Battle of the Bands they put S3OO on the bar that night and got billed S4OO for a wreaked microphone. Hideously Disfigured came second and Tension were third. Meanwhile, Nefarious's Hamilton gig at Ward Lane was cancelled because management feared violence. Nefarious have never played in Hamilton . . . Sticky Filth are releasing eight unreleased songs on cassette... Hellhall had a huge gig with Sticky Filth, Nefarious, Brainbiter, GFNR and new band Benicide plus Tauranga's Man With A Dog who are touring the east coast in August with Nefarious ... New Plymouth's new radio station Rock 100 has promised much but delivered little. JOHNNY WONSLIDER WELLINGTON The Nga Wahine Kaitito Puoru O Aotearoa NZ Composing Women's Festival will be held in town on August 7&8 with workshops and performances ... Active 89FM are having another NZ music week from August 16 to 21 ... hottest bar band in town the Hot Leftovers are to lose drummer Richard Te One as he heads overseas... Lushburger, down to a core of Simon Lear and Peter O'Donoghue, are recording at their own studio and seek a drummer—fax (04) 3853238 with your creds... the Tuataras are a new band featuring Jim Linklater, Richard Shires, Mark Lockett and Phil Hay... Banana Revolution are mixing their album at Mediate Music. Also at Mediate, Johnny Cooper, Brainchilds and Rob Joass's new band Wild Blue Yonder. The Cool Disposition album is on hold. the Gardening Angels will release their album on their own Hair Shirt label until they generate some major label interest... Skapa have been recording... industrial three piece Devoid have just finished mixing a two track demo ... the Bilge Festival have been up north in York St recording new songs for a release on Wildside. They recently completed a video for 'He's My Mummy'... Little Creature have sold over 120 apparently bootlegged copies of their unreleased cover of 'Sorry' in Australia and have had to turn down the offer of work in Japan through lack of funding ... Bar Bodega has increased the size of their stage ... the Spirals have just returned from a successful trip to Australia .. .the Wellington Music Awards will be held on August 9... Bodega is releasing a compilation tape of NZ bands and has finished mastering at Marmalade ... the former Carpark will reopen on August 18 as the Godz Own Bar with a retro 60s/ 70s flavour and inhouse music of classic NZ hits. They aim to offer the largest range of natural beers... Thunderbird 9is rumoured to be taking over booking of the recently revamped Stax in Cuba St.
