GROUNDHOG DAY
Director: Harold Ramis Bill Murray is his usual sarcastic obnoxious self as the TV weatherman sent to cover Groundhog Day. This is the day a smally furry rodent decides whether there's going to be an early spring or not, a tradition dating back over a hundred years. Having covered this hokum event for the last four years Murray is keen to get out of town fast, but a blizzard puts paid to that idea. Things get worse when Murray wakes up the next morning to find out its not — it's Groundhog Day all over again, complete with the same inane chat from the same inane locals.
The warm charm of this light comedy comes from the way Murray respondstothissituation. He originally goes nuts waking up to / Got You Babe on the radio alarm every morning and Andie McDowell, his location producer and the object of his desire, agrees he's quite loopy when he tries to explain that for him every day is Groundhog Day. Murray then learns to use the situation to his advantage (amusingly), but boredom, depression and even suicide f0110w... but he still wakes upto Sonny and Cher every morning. In failing to die can Murray discover the true meaning of life? Can he win over McDowell? Can he make it to the day after Groundhog Day? Find out. SIMON LAAN
