KTV will film the gig with excerpts to be screened over the next year on TVFM. In addition, the results of the 16-track recording of the event will be used for underprogramming KTV productions. The list reads Bats, 3Ds, Verlaines, David Kilgour, Peter Jefferies, Puddle, Death Ray Cafe, My Deviant Daughter, Windows, Magik Heads, Glovepuppet, Tin Soldiers, Cynthia Should ... in the third vain attempt it is Age of Dog not Waiting for Dog ... the recently revamped Upstage Cellars Bar at the provincial is a hit. The hip and happening hangout where three nights a week solo artists, bands — well-known or otherwise — perform, with audience participation whole-heartedly encouraged . . . Chugg have recorded four songs of which the release is nigh. Belgium label Turbulence is interested in the band ... with 'Schoolboy Song’ played constantly on Radio One, plus non-stop gigging, the funky Monkey Camp seem to be a band to watch out for. Yellow Eye are looking to tour CD buddies Funhouse, Wheetbix Boys, My Deviant Daughter and Cynthia Should around the South Island late July.. . Polyp have filmed a video for their song ‘Tairei Excursion’. Shots of Central Otago landscape combined with real train action are a change of scene for the three piece who really look their best in a badly lit pub ... Isolation Backlash have done the big split-up ... following a contest, Needles and Plastic is the new title for Radio One’s New Zealand music show . . . while original stage props suit the kinda weird Children's Television Workshop, some unimpressed boys in blue visited the gig where a stolen coffin was a feature ... Tin Soldiers will be using their QEII grant to record an EP to be released through Pagan . .. Antony Deaker is the new co-ordinator of Radio One, rep lacing Pete Bell, who in the true tradition of Student station managers has received sss from NZ On Air for a radio series on Dunedin music . . . Robbie Yeats is jamming with Dating Godot. .. a women’s music festival is in the planning stages . . . the impressive triple boxed set Killins Capitalism With Kindness has been and gone in vinyl as all 70 in NZ have sold. An extension of 4XD, they’re "committed to local music” and Headless Chickens can be heard frequently. It’s a start. . . Death Ray Cafe will debut their new lineup (Stephen Stedman replacing David Pine) on the 17th .. . the Empire is under new management, a team who want the venue to relive its glory days. A Chills gig perhaps? Operation Music Storm gets under way early September. This year Christchurch joins in, with four bands from each centre competing in the final early October... a new issue of SPeC is out. Xpressway, newish bands and venues are featured, plus the compulsory cartoons ... Chained Daisies have self-released a cassette, Unexpected Children. NATASHA GRIFFITHS CHRISTCHURCH Hibernation time in Christchurch which means few rumours and busy studios . .. Excellent Soul Therapy, Love's Ugly Children, Fudge Packers and Pumpkinhead have all been recording as has been Ben Stockwell who has produced three songs with Sarah Massey, Ally Ayrey, Gordon Tan and Jason Hammond guesting . . . death metallers Human recently made their live debut. The band consists of Scott on guitar, his brother on drums and a 14-year-old vocalist who can out growl the best. . . The Renderers are looking at recording soon with the possibility of a CD release . .. Holy Toledoes have been offered a publishing deal, but have become involved in a legal battle between Failsafe records and the publisher... the City Council are on the poster warpath once more, but are hoping to erect more official places very soon . . . new Firehouse band is Pure Luck with Drew Bowden and Jessie White . . . Supertanker consists of Dave and Brett from Catherine Wheel, Dean and Dillion. Their two appearances have gained good reactions and they are hoping to record soon ... Warners is becoming the touring venue with everyone from Tall Dwarfs to Paul Übana Jones playing there. The venue is looking at bringing over a number of Aussie acts in the next few months. J. GREENFIELD AUCKLAND King Loser have recorded five songs at SAE and made a video. Directed by Andrew Moore for an incredible four dollars, the results were stunning enough to impress Colin Hogg. The vid will appear on Andrew’s music compilation Bis Budset Fuck, featuring $4 videos of Meatboy, Tufnells and Figure 60 and more. Interesting demos will be considered for inclusion. John Segovia (Shaft, Toad, ex-Axel Grinder axe-master) has been doing some semiacoustic shows with Greg Fleming of the Trains who have a new line-up with Segovia on guitar and Andrew from Kaleidapops. The Trains will be playing the Boardwalk Bar on 25 July with Shaft and Smelter, previously known as the Chainsaw Masochist.. . Supergroove release their debut single next month to on their own newly formed Age label licensed through BMG. The band will also feature on Prime Sex in September, a teen documentary with five other NZ bands each producing singles and a video for the show ..

. SMAK made the semi-finals of the Cactus Jack’s Battle of the Bands (first prize, a gig in an LA club), but have been banned for life after destroying SI,BOO worth of equipment. Winnie after a brief battle with cancer. Max was influential in the mid-sixties folk scene and largley responsible for the development of that style through the cafe and later folk festival circles. He continued working through to the 90s, laterly with Southbound. A farewell service and memorial concert was held at the James Cabaret on July 7 that featured local and national musicians including the Warratahs and Rick Bryant. RIP Max.
