NEVILLE BROTHERS' MAORI CHANT When the Neville Brothers welcome a contingent of Maori musicians to New Orleans on 24 April, they'll be reciprocating what they experienced as one of the most meaningful compliments of their long career. On tour here recently they visited a South Auckland marae. They were so impressed with the performance of Whataaria Mai' ('How Great Thou Art') that they've included it on their forthcoming Family Groove album. “The feeling was indiscribable,' says Cyril Neville. “It was like meeting long-lost members of our own families." Once back in New Orleans Cyril hit on the idea of inviting Moana and the Moahunters to perform at the Crescent City's Jazz and Heritage Festival. The greeters at Tippitina's, the Neville's unofficial home club, will include Abdoulaye Camera, Kumbuka African Drum and Dance Collective, Salongo Productions Druma and Dance Ensemble and the Free Spirit African Dance Co. STUDENT ARTS COUNCIL After 20 years in operation the Student Arts Council will close in December— student associations no . longer feel the need for a central office to assist the provision of arts activities on campus. Many of New Zealand's most talented performers like the Topp Twins, Sam Hunt, Limbs and Split Enz began their careers as part of the Council's touring programme. However, nationwide tours are no longer considered financially viable and Social Activities Managers are looking to promote local artists on their individual campuses.

With money saved in dissolving the central office, student associations will be able to put more resources into artistic activities locally so students shouldn't suffer any loss of entertainment by the closure.

PLANETRULES Now into its seventh issue, Planet magazine is the indispensible handbook for Auckland's Inner City Bohemians (to coin one of the editor's own phrases). Published four times a year between glossy coloured pages, it's predominantly black-and-white inside, which is appropriate since one of the premises of this publication is the multi-ethnic nature of Auckland's cultural life. Planet manages to > combine an impeccably PC editorial tone with items on where to drink the most stylish coffee and why Terraboots have taken over from Blundstone as the new boot to clump around town in. Being a culture magazine, articles on art, film, music and related personnel are the main editorial meat, but you can rely on Planet to run articles explaining just what those tricky, pop-culture buzz words like Virtual Reality and Smart Drugs really mean. The editorial team includes Grant Fell from the Headless Chickens and the editor is Russell Brown. NZ MUSIC TN FOCUS' TV3's teen TV show In Focus returns to the small screen on April 25 with some hot rock stories in the pipeline. - The famous outdoor Devonport concert (reviewed in last month's R/D) screens Saturday May 2,4.30 pm — your chance to see the likes of Rumblefish, Nixons, Dead Flowers, Shovelfinger, Braintree and Peoplehood do the Woodstock thang. And some time in mid-May expect a feature on Tin Soldiers, one of Dunedin's younger, groovier bands. In Focus is, of course, the show that gives teenagers a chance to script, shoot and edit their own video news items. (M-OFFCDs Auckland based company Kruse Productions are offering a one-off CD recording sevice. They'll make discs recording up to one hour's worth of audio information and can be played back on any domestic or commercial CD player. Ideal for demos for airplay. YAHOO'S TRIGGERS If you got up at 9am a few Saturdays _ ago you might have seen TV3's hilarious alternative Music Awards on Yahoo. This is the programme that manages to lure wild rock bands onto its sound stage at an hour when all

self-respecting rocksters should be climbing into bed, but there they all were, ready to get their awards, everyone from Push Push and the Headless Chickens to SMAK and Freakpower. Push Push won the Best Use Of Hair award, which seemed a little unfair since a lot of 'alternative' bands have just as much hair and are even posierwith it; Most Use of Water In A Video went to David Kilgour for 'You Forget'; Classic Rock Stance award went to Rumblefish (also nominated for the Hair award); The Awesome Lyric Award was scored by SMAK for the immortal lines "We're glad we're bad" (narrowly nudging out the Exponents' "Tell me what oh whatever happened to Tracey"; Best Video was won by MC OJ & Rhythm Slave for 'Money Worries' directed by Matt Palmer; Best Single went to Headless Chickens for 'Cruise Control' (Chris Matthews has shaved all his hair off!) and the Fabulous Performers Award went to Supergroove. Moana kept thinking she was gonna win an award and finally won the I Work Here So I Should Get One award and Jordan Luck won the Big Nose Award. Oh yes, Fagan won the special category Nick Cave Bodypainting Award — Karen's idea perhaps? All in all a great piece of spoof TV, pity it didn't screen later in the day. DOBBYN THEME Dave Dobbyn has been commissioned to compose the title track for TV3's first local drama series Homeward Bound. Based around the lives of three generations of a typical New Zealand family and starring such well-known local actors as Peter Elliot, Tina Grenville and Sylvia Rands, it's expected to screen in the middle of the year. VOLCANO BOOGIE Described as a rollerblading "rockudrama" City of Volcanoes is a production from Mike Off The Edge Firth, featuring an original score by well-known New Zealand musician Mike Farrell. The movie closes on a music video for the song There Is No Limit 1 with lyrics written by Auckland law student Brooke Howard-Smith and special guest appearances by Midge Marsden and Jacqui Fitzgerald. Watch out for the cassingle There Is No Limif being released later this month on the Scoop de Loop label and distributed by Metro Marketing. City of Volcanoes is for sale at Whitcoulls stores and selected retail outlets.
