North The recording of Netherworld Dancing Toys' debut single for Virgin Records had to be postponed >after the capstam motor in the Harlequin 24-track recorder broke down and stayed out of commission for four days until parts could be flown in from Japan. The Chills recorded their next single ‘Dole Drums' while in Auckland recently and will be back up late September to mix the thang Chills, Verlaines, Doublehappys and Netherworlds participated in a highly successful (both musically and financially) under age gig at Mainstreet a few Sundays ago to raise over S2OOO to buy a 16mm camera for use in Flying Nun video making ... Australian label Hot Records is planning a 14-track Flying Nun compilation, for release both in Oz and here. Hot is distributed here by Jayrem, which makes things interesting. Jayrem itself has another NZ compilation, Kiwifruit Salad, due for release. Tracks from Miltowns, Marginal Era, Car Crash Set, Mockers, Wastrels and others ... also soon are a single from Rotorua band Kairo and an EP by Auckland’s D.V.C.E. and the soundtrack to local movie The Silent One, with single. Metal fans should be well pleased at the news that Strikemaster. Tokyo and Nightshade

will be broadcast nationwide on RWP. The soundtrack for the show, filmed at Wellington’s Ascot, will be issued as Three Points of Metal. Another fab Campus Radio night at the Gluepot on September 13 features the Expendables and the live debut from This Kind of Punishment Ode Records are releasing EPs from Ja Ja Jackal and Radio Active Also coming up is a new Russ Le Roq single ‘Even If I Tried’ ... meanwhile Ode has made an arrangement for special rates for its bands at Lab studios, who now have a 16-track desk. Freudian Slips have new singer Penny Andrews and guitarist Amanda. As well as playing live both in Auckland and Wellington they are working on a new single at Montage Studios ... The Kiwi Animal are to release a cassette version of their vinyl album Music Media, which will be four minutes longer and feature a new version of 'Performance Piece’. Watch out for another TKA show on Campus Radio, 10pm Mon Sept 3 ... Peking Man have their second record, a single called 'Scared Of A Sound' out on Hit Singles next month. Diatribe have reformed with new bassist John Fraser, new guitarist Junior Grant and trumpeter Greg Robinson (formerly of Ja Ja Jackal, who have now split) ... new Pleasure Boys members are Peter Allpress (guitar) and Shane Bollingford (drums). The Boys are currently heading all the way south on a tour. The 1984 NZ Music Awards have been scheduled for Monday November 12 at the Michael Fowler Centre. They’ll be broadcast live again ... Radio Hauraki has announced its intention to apply for Auckland’s third FM licence ... and David (Angel Mind) Byth’s new horror film Death Warmed Up opens in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch on August 31. The three runners up respectively were Timaru's Catholic Taste, Crystal Zoom and Stuffed Husbands bass player Vince Pinker has left the Gordons to do sound work for

any local bands requiring his services. His departure comes just prior to the release of the Gordons' new album. The Punch recently won the South Canterbury Band War. Second was the Mudlarks and third the mildly amusing Naughty Thoughts. The Punch did not actually win their heat but were chosen as one of the two extra bands to go in from the non heal winners ... the AEB has organised an unemployment collective benefit to be held at the Star and Garter on Sept 14,15. Top bands from all over the country will be on hand to provide the entertainment ... Crystal Zoom supported Motorhead at their Dunedin concert but only 500 showed up. Bassist Eric Neuman was returned to the band and they hope to have a single out soon. En route to the Big Apple, YFC singer/bassist Johnny Ogilvie played tourist in Nashville by going into a studio and recording vocals to a backing tape of 'Hound Dog'. He emerged with a flexidisc for his efforts but as yet no release, date has -been announced ... and after many requests for 'Duane Eddy’, Rough Trade Records in ol' London town have ordered 20 copies of the Great Unwashed s "Singles” record. This is only the beginning, we hope. The singles, incidentally, have sold out and will shortly be reissued on a 12" 45. AC & GK
