ORDERS OF REFERENCE Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives Wednesday, the 16th Day op July, 1947 Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting on nine members, to consider all matters in connection with defence which may be referred to it; the Committee to consist of Mr. Anderton, Mr. Fortune, Mr. R. Macdonald, Mr. T. L. Macdonald, Mr. Macfarlane, Mr. Osborne, Mr. Roy, Mr. Sim, and the Mover."—(Hon. Mr. Nordmeyer, for the Hon. Mr. Jones.) Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1946 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session." —(Right Hon. Mr. Fraser.) Thursday, the 9th Day of October, 1947 Ordered, " That the report of the Defence Committee on the petition of J. Shortal be referred back to the Committee for further consideration."—(Mr. Hanan.) Thursday, the 20th Day of November, 1947 Ordered, " That the Patriotic and Canteen Funds Bill be referred to the Defence Comfliittee."— (Hon. Mr. Parry.) REPORTS No. 52.—Petition of G. J. Franklin, of 39 Burke Street, Palmerston North Praying for compensation for injury sustained during service in the Armed Forces, I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. 3rd September, 1947.

No. 66.—Petition of Selena Ellis, 15 Racecourse Road, Riccarton, Christchurch Praying for a war widow's pension. I am directed to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. 9th October, 1947. No. 42. —Petition of J. Shortal, of Invercargill (First Report) Praying for inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his discharge from the New Zealand Permanent Military Forces. I am directed to report that the Committee has very carefully considered this petition, and has no recommendation to make. 9th October, 1947. No. 70/1946. —Petition of W. Sears, of Christchurch Praying for full war pension. I have the honour to report that in so far as the prayer of the petition is concerned the Committee has no recommendation to make, but the Committee is of the opinion that the petitioner should immediately apply for a war veteran's allowance. 15th October, 1947. No. 62/1946. —Petition of A. J. Simpson, of Christchurch Praying for a review of the allowance paid him in respect of the effects of his service in the Armed Forces. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 23rd October, 1947. No. 102. —Petition of B. Howard, of New Plymouth Praying for a full war pension and compensation, or inquiry into the administration of the War Pensions Act, 1943. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make in regard to this petition. 6th November, 1947. No. 42.—Petition of J. Shortal, of Invercargill (Second Report) Praying for inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his discharge from the New Zealand Permanent Military Forces. , I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for inquiry into all the circumstances raised by the subject-matter of the petition. 6th November, 1947.

No. 71. —Petition of Marjory H. Brindle, of Wellington Praying for compensation for the death of her husband, allegedly due to injuries received while serving in the Forces. I have the honour to report that, the honourable member who presented the petition having intimated to the Committee that he wishes the same to be withdrawn, the Committee recommends that leave to withdraw it be granted him accordingly. 6th November, 1947. No. 78. —Petition of L. H. Burney, of Marshlands Praying for additional compensation in respect of loss allegedly caused through the construction of defence works on his property. I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 13th November, 1947. No. 101.—Petition of R. Voyce, of Te Kuiti Praying for compensation for deterioration in health allegedly due to illness contracted while on indefinite leave without pay from the Armed Forces. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make in regard to this petition. 13th November, 1947. Patriotic and Canteen Funds Bill I am directed to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered the Patriotic and Canteen Funds Bill, and recommends that the Bill be allowed to proceed without amendment.
