ORDERS OP REFERENCE.

Extracts from. the Journals of the House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 26th Day of Mabch, 1941. Ordered, That a Sclect Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from M to Z wbieb may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House, and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House : the Committee to consist of Mr. P. Carr, Mr. Undcan, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Kidd, Mr. Macfarlane, Dr. McMillan, Mr. Neilson, Mr. Osborne, Mrs. Stewart, and the Mover."—(Hon. Mr. Parry, for the Hon. Mr. Armstrong.) Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1940 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. Mr. Eraser.)

No. 7. —Petition of Ida McGregor, of 31 Rimu Street, New Plymouth. Praying for payment of the full compassionate grant awarded to her in consideration of the death of her husband. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th July, 1941.

No. 14. —Petition of Kathleen Pettit, 7 Hadfield Terrace, Kelburn, Wellington. Praying for a compassionate allowance in consideration of her late husband's services as a Government employee. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th July, 1941.

No. 64/1940. —Petition of W. S. Wilson, of Wellington. Praying for the removal of the cattle-yards at Johnsonville and for the incorporation of that district in Greater Wellington. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 31st July, 1941.

No. 85/1940. —Petition of R. Tregoning, of Seddon, Farmer. Praying that certain farm lands be exempted from the payment of special rates pursuant to the Water-supply Act, 1908. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 31st July, 1941.

No. 9. —Petition of Violette G. Masters, of Wellington S. 1. Praying for a compassionate grant in respect of the death of her husband, allegedly arising out of his services with the Railways Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 7th August, 1941.

No. 11.—Petition of J. Worthington, 153 Great South Road, One Tree Hill, Auckland S.E. 4. Praying for the hearing of his appeal for regrading before the Railways Appeal Board. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 7th August, 1941.

No. 19. —Petition of G. 11. Russell, 60 Miramar Avenue, Miramar. Praying for an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the alleged loss of his capital. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 14th August, 1941.

No. 26. —Petition of T. P. Simpson, 94 Oban Street, Wadestown, Wellington. Praying for an investigation of his plan to terminate the war. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 14th August, 1941.

No. 2. —Petition of J. Walker, of Waihau Bay, Farmer, and 3 Others. Praying that they be relieved of their liability for payment of certain death duties in respect of the estate of James Walker (deceased). I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 21st August, 1941.

No. 17. —Petition of the New Women's Club, Auckland. Praying for amendment of the Social Security Act, 1938. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make, 21st August, 1941,

No. 25. —Petition of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., Timaru. Praying for refund of death duties in respect of the estate of the late Henry Arthur Le Cren. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 28th August, 1941.

No, 20. —Petition of L, H. Newport, Labourer, Hawera. Praying for compensation for loss of horses, allegedly due to being overworked while engaged on a public-works contract. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 4tli September, 1941.

No. 35.—Petition of R. McDonald, 4 High Street, Greymouth, and 20 Others. Praying that the provisions of the Licensing Act, 1908, and its amendments be strictly enforced. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 4th September, 1941.

No. 57. —Petition of F. E. Wright, 7 Cuba Street, Lower Hutt. Praying for compensation for alleged reduction in the value of his property as a result of the construction of the Cuba Street ramp, Lower Hutt City. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 7th October, 1941. A, G. Osborne, Chairman.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions M to Z Committee passed the following resolution : — " That this Committee desires to record its appreciation of the capable manner in which the Clerk, Mr. M. S. Pasley, has discharged his various duties during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House." 15th October, 1941. Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions M to Z Committee passed the following resolution : — " That this Committee desires to record its appreciation of the care and ability with which the Chairman, Mr. A. G. Osborne, has conducted the business of the Committee during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House." 15th October, 1941. Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions M to Z Committee, consisting of ten members, has held nine meetings during the session ; the average attendance at each meeting being five. The number of petitions referred to the Committee was sixteen, fourteen of which were considered and reported on to the House. Two petitions are held over until next session, 15th October, 1941, A.
