ORDERS OP REFERENCE. Extracts from the. Journals of the House of Representatives. Thursday, the 11th Day of July, 1940. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from M to Z which may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House, and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House : the Committee to consist of Mr. P. Carr, Mr. Goosman, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Kidd, Mr. Macfarlane, Mr. Neilson, the Rev. Mr. Nordmeyer, Mr. Osborne, Mrs. Stewart, and the Mover."—(Hon. Mr. Semple.) Ordered, " That during the present session all Select Committees appointed by the House have leave to sit on days on which the House is not sitting, provided that when it is proposed to sit on any such day at least three days' notice shall be given to each member of the Committee of the date of the sitting."—(Right Hon. Mr. Fraser.) Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1939 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. No. 65/1939.—Petition of G. J. Silver, of Belmont, Auckland. Praying for compensation for alleged wrongful arrest and imprisonment. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make 21st August, 1940.

No. 3.—Petition of Harriet Ellen Vanstone, Widow, Mount Pleasant, Little River, Canterbury. Praying that the ownership of her late husband's property be restored to her. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 21st August, 1940.

No. 28.—Petition of W. T. Morpeth, Broadmore Street, New Plymouth. Praying for refund of income-tax and unemployment tax allegedly overpaid in 1934, 1 am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 22nd August, 1940.

No. 76. —Petition of L. W. O'Brien, Karangahake. Praying that he be provided with light work at an adequate remuneration, or other relief, owing to inability to resume his former occupation on account of injuries sustained while engaged' on roadconstruction works. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 22nd August, 1940.

No. 62/1939.—Petition of Tauranga County Council, of Tauranga, and 5 Other Adjacent Local Authorities. Praying that the construction of the road leading from the Waihi-Whakatane State Highway to Mount Maunganui be undertaken by the Main Highways Board. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 22nd August, 1940.

No. 70/1939. —Petition of Maggie Thompson, of Pakowhai, Hastings. Praying for compensation for loss sustained on account of alleged forced sale of a .business. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 29th August, 1940.

No. 25.—Petition of T. F. Simpson, 94 Oban Street, Wadestown, Wellington. Praying for investigation of his plans for assisting the war effort. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 2nd October, 1940.

No. 296/1934—Petition of W. H. Overton, of Queenstown, and 368 Others. Praying that the Borough of Queenstown be excluded from the Power Board area. I have the honour to report that the member in charge of the petition having expressed a desire to withdraw same, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 3rd October, 19-10.

No. 5/1939.—Petition of Westland Power, Limited, of Westland. Praying for liquidation of certain liabilities in connection with an undertaking to generate and supply electricity in the Westland Power Board District. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration with a view to the acquisition by the Government of the assets of the company. 3rd October, 1940.

No. 33.—Petition of W. D. Taylor, Farmer, Mangatainoka, and Another. Praying for refund of portion of the duties paid in respect of the estate of the late Thomas Saunders, I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th October, 1940.

No. 124/1937. —Petition of F. G. Marshall, 31 Beaumont Road, Dunedin. Praying for inquiry into the conditions of employment of certain insurance canvassers. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 28th November, 1940.

No. 67.—Petition of Nada Lily Martin, 91 Nevay Road, Miramar, and 1,118 Others. No. 77.—Petition of R. Adams, 121 Ghuznee Street, Wellington, and 350 Others. Praying that Douglas Murdoch Martin be forthwith released from prison and that his sentence be commuted. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. In the opinion of the Committee prisoner should be released when he has served half his prison term, subject to his conduct in prison in the meantime being satisfactory and to his giving an undertaking to refrain from subversive actions during the remaining period of his sentence. 3rd December, 1940.

No. 24.—Petition of W. A. Sheat, Parmer, Egmont, and 949 Others. Praying for remission of heavy-traffic fees in respect of farmers' motor-trucks. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth December, 1940. A. H. Nordmeyer, Chairman.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions M to Z Committee passed the following resolution: — That this Committee desires to record its appreciation of the capable manner in which the Clerk, Mr. M. S. Pasley, has discharged his various duties during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House." oth December, 1940. Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions M to Z Committee passed the following resolution :— " That this Committee desires to record its appreciation of the care and ability with which the Chairman, Eev. Mr. Nordmeyer, has conducted the business of the Committee during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House." oth December, 1940. Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions M to Z Committee, consisting of ten members, has held eleven meetings during the session, the average attendance at each meeting being seven. The number of petitions referred to the Committee was sixteen, fourteen of which were considered and reported on to the House.
