ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the. House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 23rd Day of July, 1930. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from Mto Z that may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House, and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of the Rev. No. 19.—Petition of Otahuhu Borough Council. Praying for an amendment of the Valuation of Land Act. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration and inquiry, with a view to giving relief. 11th September, 1930.

No. 13.—Petition of Michael Power, of Whangarei. Praying for inquiry into his dismissal from the Police Force. I am directed to report that the Committee, after carefully weighing all the evidence, is of the opinion that the punishment meted out to ex-Constable Power was unduly severe, and recommends the petition to the Government for favourable consideration. 17th September, 1930.

No. 416/1929, —Petition of Hannah T. Scully, of Wellington. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect of her late husband's and late daughter's services in the Public Service. I am directed to report that, the member in charge of the petition having expressed a desire to withdraw same, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 2nd October, 1930.

No. 54. —Petition of J. J. Meikle, of Auckland. Praying that effect be given to the various reports of the Public Petitions M to Z Committee. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with the suggestion that it should consider granting the petitioner a suitable annuity of not less than £4 per week. 2nd October, 1930.

No. 98. —Petition of A. R. Young, of Lower Hutt. Praying that a recommendation of the Public Petitions M to Z Committee be given effect to. I am directed to report that the Committee reaffirms its decision of last year —namely, that the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 2nd October, 1930.

No. 424/1929. —Petitioii of F. E. Wright, of Lower Hutt. Praying for compensation for loss sustained through the erection of the Government railway ramp in front of his property at Lower Hutt. No. 228.—Petition of R. G. Stanley, of Wellington. Praying for an inquiry into his case and reinstatement in the lighthouse service of the Marine Department. Praying that Frederick Richard Field's services be obtained, and that he be given a position in the Public Service in connection with his scientific work. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Committee desires to record its hearty appreciation of the ability, care, and attention devoted by the Chairman, Mr. P. Lye, to the business of the Committee, and of the courteous and tactful manner in which his duties have been carried out during the session ; and further desires that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. 11. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Committee desires to record its appreciation of the efficient manner in which the Clerk, of the Public Petitions M to Z Committee, Mr. E. A. Dobbie, has carried out his duties during the session ; and, further, that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. 22nd October, 1930.
