ORDER OP REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the 3rd Day of July, 1903. Ordered, "That Standing Order No. 211 be suspended, and that a Committee be appointed, consisting of thirteen members, to examine and report upon questions relating to the railways, with power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Arnold, Mr. Bennet, Mr. Hogg, Mr. Lawry, Mr. Massey, Mr. R. McKenzie, Mr. Rhodes, Mr. Sidey, Mr. Tanner, Mr. J. C. Thomson, Mr. Witty, Mr. Wood, and the mover."—(Hon. Sir J. G. Ward.)

No. 144.—Petition of Thomas Patterson, of Invercargill. Petitioner prays for compensation for injuries received in connection with a railway accident. I am directed to report that the Committee considers petitioner was fully compensated, and has no recommendation to make. 30th July, 1903.

No. 99.—Petition of R. M. Patterson and Another, of Camelon, Falkirk, Scotland. Petitioners state that they have suffered loss by fire on account of sparks from an engine on the Government railway, and pray for compensation. No. 149. —Petition of Edward Simpson, of Thames. Petitioner prays for some relief on account of injury received in the Karangahake Tunnel. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the M to Z Committee. sth August, 1903.

No. 829.—Petition of T. Walsh, of Stratford. (Second report.) Petitioner prays for compensation on account of accident sustained while in charge of a train. I have to report that the reconsideration of this petition was held over till next session to allow the petitioner an opportunity to attend if he wishes to do so. 18th November, 1903.

No. 748. —Petition of William Colville, of Crescent Road, Cnristchurch. Petitioner, who was in the railway service, asks for compassionate allowance, he having resigned his position. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 18th November, 1903.

No. 534. —Petition of Henry Davis and 1,092 Others on behalf of Joseph Dineen, lessee of the Railway Refreshment-rooms at Ashburton. Petitioners pray that compensation be given Mr. Dineen on account of "no license " being carried after he had taken over the rooms for a period of three years. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 18th November, 1903.

Nos. 843 and 844.—Petitions of James Miller and 25 Others and A. Madill and 49 Others, of Tuakau. Petitioners pray that suitable railway buildings may be erected, and ask that the Rotorua express train may be allowed to stop at Tuakau Station. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that these petitions be referred to the Government for consideration. 18th November, 1903.
