Notes.—Permanent way is computed on a mileage basis after deducting the value of the material in stock on 31st March, 1880, which in the Middle Island amounted to £93,400. Rolling Stock is computed on the basis of the traffic receipts for a period ending 31st March, 1880. The cost of the line from Invercargill to the Bluff is not included, as the Railway Department treat it as a part of the main line from Clinton to the Bluff. The " Expenditure by Provinces " is the amount allowed by the Valuers appointed under the 28th section of " The Financial Arrangements Act, 1856," and is not classified. Public Works Department, W.
