WAR-TIME ITALIAN PRISON SHIP AT TIMARU.—The motor-ship Nino Bixio (8427 tons), which will be remembered by many New Zealand returned soldiers who were taken prisoner of war during the North African campaign, photographed at Timaru. She is on charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company. In August, 1942, the Nino Bixio sailed from Benghazi for an Italian port, her holds packed with a large draft of New Zealand prisoners of war. On the second day out the ship was struck by two torpedoes from a British submarine, one of which exploded into a hold, killing many prisoners and injuring others. The badly-damaged ship was taken in tow by a destroyer and finally reached port.
