BIG GRAB DREDGER.—The Clyde Bay, claimed to be the largest grab dredger in Europe, at work on a £230,000 contract forming part of the final civil engineering works connected with the construction of the Pembroke power station for Britain’s Central Electricity Generating Board. The vessel has dredged the cooling-water outlet channel and removed most of the earth and rock-fill dam across the power station’s intake channel. The Clyde Bay’s grab holds 14 cubic yards, and the material it dredges up is carried out to sea and dumped by the contractor’s self-propelled hopper barges Thames Bay and Tyne Bay. The power station is expected to be working fully in 1972.

For over two years there has been in progress work on one of the greatest engineering projects ever undertaken in New Zealand—the harnessing of the Waitaki River for the production of electricity. Although the construction of the dam is far from complete, good progress is being made with other branches of the work. The picture on the top shows the construction of the towers for the outdoor switching station, which is below the power-house. The lower view Is a photograph showing the erection of dwellings for toe permanent staff.. Mr R. H. Packwood, engineer-in-charge of the work, lives in the house on the extreme right, and in the foieground is the hostel in course of construction for single men. ,
