NEW TRANS-TASMAN AIRCRAFT.—This photograph shows the latest Lockheed Electra aircraft in flight. Three of these machines have been ordered by T.E.A.L. for trans-Tasman service. The aircraft is able to carry a mixed seating total of 80 passengers (37 first-class and 43 tourist-class) together with 2500lb of cargo. The width of the interior ensures that the five-abreast seating arrangement for tourist-class can be accomplished with a comfortable seat width and passage-way allowance. By the time the first Electra is delivered to T.E.A.L., about 110 of these aircraft will have entered service with at least 12 airlines in various parts of the world.

BIRD WATCH AT AIRPORT.—A member of the crash crew at the Logan international airport, Boston, stands guard with a gun as an Eastern Airlines Electra takes off on November 18, when a round-the-clock patrol of the run-way areas was begun to keep birds from the paths of aircraft. Flocks of birds are believed to have caused the crash of an Electra on October 4, when 62 of the 72 passengers were killed. On November 17 a big flock of birds forced one of the airline’s jets to stop as it was taking off with 107 persons on board.
