WOMEN’S PIPE BAND BREAKS WORLD MARCHING RECORD.—By marching thirteen miles before stopping for a rest the City of Christchurch Ladies’ Highland Pipe Band beat the Canadian twelve-mile record, when the band halted at Weedons after marching from the Industries Fair on Saturday morning. New Zealand’s champion junior marching leader, Tania Jones (Uniflex Pioneers), of Christchurch, with the Hayhurst Trophy she won at the national marching championships at Invercargill last week-end. Miss Jones, aged 15, has been marching for seven years. She won the New Zealand midget leader title in 1982, and has won several other junior championships since. This is the sixth successive year that the junior leader title has been won by a Canterbury competitor.

The Phoenix Rangers senior marching team shows off its Indian Calvary sabres during a practice at the Papanui Primary School yesterday. Phoenix Rangers is the only team in New Zealand using sabres as a marching aid and has been training three days a week for the Canterbury Marching Association’s grading day on Sunday.
