U.S. EDUCATIONAL' FOUNDATION QUALIFIED HEW ZEALANDERS (Special to “Guardian”). ' WELLINGTON, This Day. ‘The United States Educational Foundation in New Zealand today announced the availability of 19 travel grants for qualified New Zealanders under the 1951 Fulbrjght Educational exchange programme between this country and the United States.

Applicants, except school teachers, will be expected to affiliate with some institution of higher learning in the U.S. during the 1951-52 academic year beginning in September, 1951, and before an award is made they will be required to obtain a scholarship or make other arrangements for sufficient dollar, funds to support them in the U.S. Applications will be accepted, however, from those who have a reasonable hope of complying with these requirements. The grants Avill cover return fare from the grantee’s home in New Zealand to the- educational institution with which he or she secures affilia- . tfon in .the United States. Applications will be considered from New Zealand citizens in four categories:—(a) Graduate student, 10 grants; (b) primary or post-primary school teacher, three grants; (c) research scholar, three grants; (d) visiting professor, three grants. The categories are determined by the applicant’s proposed activities in s the United States. Those planning to study towards a University degree in the United States should apply in the Graduate Student category i They ’ must be University graduates at the time of application. Teacher applicants should apply to the Director of Education, Wellington for consideration under the exchange of teachers scheme after they have seen the de- 1 tails which are being published in the Education Gazette on July .1. The research scholar category covers those planning special advanced courses not' leading to a degree, or advanced research work. Applications in the visiting professor category will be invited to lecture at a university in the United States, Applicants in all categories must undertake to return to New Zealand at the end of their study. / Preference will be given to student, applicants who will be planning to spend at least an academic year in the United States, professors and research scholars planning a short stay may, in special cases, be considered for a grant. Selection Committee Applications will first be screened by a New Zealand selection committee and then by the Board of Directors of the United States Educational Foundation in New Zealand. Selection will be based on academic records, experience, personality and the extent to which the proposed field of activity fits in with the general purposes or the programme. Names of recommended applicants will then be submitted by the Foundation to the Board of Foreign Scholarships in the United States, which has final authority to award the grants. The local selection will be made immediately after applications close, but it is not ■expected that tire awards will be made in the United States until about May, 1951. The Foundation takes no responsibility for securing scholarships for students, but it has been' able to advise a number of well qualified New Zealand graduates who have succeeded in obtaining scholarships by making application to one or more American Universities. Further information on this point may be obtained from the Foundation. Box 1301, Wellington, with which applications close on August 1, 1950.
