EARTHQUAKE IN JAVA

WORST FOR 50 YEARS SEVENTEEN KILLED (N.Z.P A.-Keutei^-Copyrlgnt). (Rec. 9.30.) JAKARTA, June 20. An earthquake in East Java yesterday killed 17 and injured several hundred, according to the Aneta News Agency correspondent at Sourabaya. The correspondent said the earthquake struck at 12.40 p.m., G.M.T., and lasted in some districts for up to one minute. In the small village of Crissee, in north-west Sourabaya, 14 were killed and over 100 injured. Fifty houses were completely destroyed and several hundreds damaged. In Sourabaya two were killed and 25 injured, and many houses were damaged and electricity and telephone services were temporarily disrupted.

Forty-three out of 53 people worshipping in a mosque near Crissee were injured.

The correspondent said the 'quake was described as the worst in 50 years in East Java.
