SOME VISITORS COMPETE
ATHLETICS
SHOT PUT RECORD BROKEN A team of athletes from Temuka appeared at the Ashburton Amateur ' Athletic Club’s weekly meeting last ■ evening, providing some strong opposition for local runners, especially •» in the women’s events. For many of 1 those competing the meeting was regarded as a training run for the South > Canterbury athletic championships 1 next Saturday. The highlight of the evening was ; the breaking of the club shot put ' record by the veteran D. Ross, who showed that he has lost little of his ! ability in this event. Several years ago Ross and his brother, A. Ross, were always figuring prominently in I field events, and as he has little opportunity to practise, Ross’s performance in putting the shot 35 feet 2 inches (two inches better than the Canterbury and Wellington provincial standards) was a good one. Miss M. Martin, of the Temuka Club, won two of the women’s sprints, due to her speed off the mark. The 75 yards, which Miss Martin won in 9 3-3 seconds, attracted the largest field of women athletes sebn on the Oval this season./ The unlucky runner in this event was Miss R. Sides, of Ashburton, who was forced to cover extra ground, as she was hindered in her progress by another runner. However, she finished with a great burst to secure fourth place. The first round of the .open 880 yards was covered in 59 1-5 seconds, with the scratch men easily overhauling the rest of the field. However, the second lap was a good deal slower, being covered in 74 2-5 seconds. Results of events were:— 100 yards—schoolboys: J. McCormick (Gyds) 1, B. McPiiail (scr) 2, R. McPhail (lyd),3.
