JAPANESE COTTON

BRITISH COMPLAINT OF COMPETITION LONDON, January 4. Complacency in Government circles at the resurgence of Japanese competition in the cotton trade was complained of in a report presented to the China and Far East section of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce yesterday. There was yet no sign, said the report, of true realisation in official circles of the fundamental dangers in the present redevelopment of the Japanese cotton texile industry. British exporters felt that a most serious form of competition was only a question of time. It was limited at the moment only by shortages of dollars in the hands of potential customers. The report added: “These barriers, under the pressure of economic necessity, may break down more rapidly than is generally thought.”
