DEATH OF FRENCH HEIRESS

HUSBAND CHARGED WITH MURDJbiK • ' PARIS, Jan. 4. Don John Carlos da-Silva Ramos, the wealthy 25-year-old son of a former Brazilian diplomat, was charged last night with the murder of his French heiress wife, Monique, aged 20. She died at Biarritz on October 3 from what at first was thought to be an overdose of a sleeping draught. A verdict of suicide was returned, but later a small bag containing curare—a poison once used by South American Indians on arrow tips—was found at the villa where she died. Curare brings death in a matter of seconds and leaves little trace, Don John was arrested last week after he returned to Paris from London to help the police inquiries. His marriage to Monique in 1947 was one of the most glittering events of the Paris season. They were' among the most prominent social couple of Europe and had the reputation for large-scale lavish entertainment. Don John has retained France’s leading criminal lawyer, M. Maurice Garean, as his principal advocate, and the case promises to be one of the most sensational murder trials in France for years.
