Record Gate at Show Approximately £4250 was paid by the public in entrance money, at the Christchurch Metropolitan Show yesterday. This was a record for People’s Day. It made the total gate takings for the two days £5073 compared with the previous highest takings of £4796 for the two days of the 1947 show.

Empire Games At least 600 competitors will take part in the Empire Games in Auckland next February, according to the organising secretary (Mr C. L. Cleal). The previous highest total was 464 in Sydney in 1948. Mr Cleal expects from 50 to 70 officials to accompany the teams. Hong Kong reported yesterday by cable that it will not take part. The only other country'still to return its entry forms is Ceylon, which earlier indicated its intention to send a team of more than 20. Extra accommodation will be needed at the Ardmore Teachers’ Training College, where there are facilities for 596. Mr Cleal said this could be provided without major additions."
