GENERAL SERVICE BY GROCERS

ACCUSATION OF “PIRACY” RESENTED (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 23. An allegation that grocers were the worst pirates on other trades in New Zealand, which was made by the president of the New Zealand Federation of Retail Fruiterers and Greengrocers (Mr L. K. Jonkere) has drawn a reply from the president of the Southland Master Grocers’ Association (Mr N. Poole). “I would mention to Mr Jonkers that the grocer was a fruiterer before there was any such thing as a specialised fruiterer,” said Mr Poole. “The retail trade in this country began with the general store, which, in modern terms, ie the grocer. The general store provided the consumer with fruit, meat and hardware long before retailers began to concentrate on a single line. The modern grocer is merely trying to provide a similar service.

“To accuse a grocer of piracy merely because he attempts to carry on the tradition of providing a full range of goods for the customer is surely a little hard,” said Mr Poole.
