SKIRMISH INTERRUPTS GOLF MATCH (P.A.) AUCKLAND. April 18. Mr ft. B. Monteath, who _ arrived from Rangoon in the Monowai to-day. said lie had had to stop a game of golf , on-the Rangoon course because one political party was busy firing .mortar at another on the fairway. Mr Monteath, who worked for shipping company agents in Rangoon, said that because of political “campaigning” he had not left the city area for a year..
“One party cut off the water in Rangoon just before I left,” said Mr Monteath. “Once before tlie Karens got elephants to work 'shifting the pipes, and tlie water was off for a. few days.” Europeans were not singled out for persecution by the natives, but they did not move far away from the towns because of the restless state oi the country.
