ALLEGED THEFT

Motor Dealer Charged REMANDED ON BAIL “Further charges arc pending, and T would ask that any bail granted he substantial,” said De-tective-Sergeant R. S. Smith, of Christchurch, in the Magistrate’s Court at Ashburton late yesterday afternoon, when Baden James McEwan, aged 87, of 96 Grey Street, a motor dealer and mechanic, appeared on a charge of having failed to account for moneys, thereby committing theft.

Messrs W. IT. Amos and W. H. Sarnev, J.'s i\, were on the bench, and accused was charged as folloAVs:

“That on May 2, 1948, having received from Cordon John Burgess the sum of £BS on terms requiring him to account for or pay the sum of £S2 Os 6d to James McLaughlin, did fraudulently and without colour of right omit to account for or pay the said sum to James McLaughlin, and did thereby commit theft.” “Accused was arrested at 3 p.m. by Detective C. P. Burns (of Christchurch) and myself,” said DetectiveSergeant Smith. “I understand there is a sitting of the Court on January 24 and, if accused consents, I will ask that he be remanded until that date.”

Accused, who \\ r as not represented by counsel, said he was agreeable to the remand as suggested. The Bench granted the remand and fixed bail in accused’s oavu recognisance of £2OO, Avith one surety of a similar amount, and the further stipulation that accused report to the police daily.
