IMMIGRANTS DUE

DRAFT OF 900 ON FRIDAY I (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. The Government immigrant ship Atlantis is expected to arrive at Wellington on Friday morning with 900 passengers of -whom 762 are Govern-ment-assisted settlors. The remainder of the berths were allocated by the Department of Labour and Employment on an employment priority basis. The 762 settlers include 277 men and 485 women, of whom 534 will be distributed in the North Island and 228 in the South Island.

The Minister of Labour (the Hon. A. McLagan) said this was the vessel’s first-trip since February, since when alterations had been carried out to the ship’s accommodation to enable more passengers to be carried. A cinema had been installed and films suplied through the High Commissioner’s Office, London, and a Government information officer who travelled in the vessel gave talks and lectures, promoted games and activities, and did everything possible to assist new settlers.
