LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 12, 1899). Rakaia Library—The annual meeting of subscribers to the Rakaia Library Avas held in the library on Tuesday night. The following officers were elected: —Committee, Messrs Oxley, Wilkinson, George Hardy, Thompson, C. A. C. Hai-cly, J. Stephenson, J. R. Sharp, and W. Lambie. Mr Oxley was re-elected chairman and treasurer. Mr Liddy was re-elected librarian. An honorarium Avas passed for him, and the congratulations of the subscribers for his past seiwices.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 12, 1924). SAvimming Carnival—There was a good muster of swimmers a-t the East Ashburton Club’s carnival on Saturday afternoon. Beside many local SAvimmers, several from Christchurch performed, namely, K. Cameron, A. Cameron, A. Bolan, and G. Tippler. A. Cameron, in his heat in the 50 yards Inter-Club Handicap, won his heat (Avith lsee. handicap) in 28sec., which is a fair performance. In the Boys’ 25 Yards Handicap, J. Thomson, 11 years, brought off the honours in a Avell sAvum race. This young performer also contested the Inter-Club Dive, and, though he was not placed, he received a special prize of 10s on account of his pluck, by Mr J. Hunt,’ of Hampstead.
